A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE THE RIGHT REVEREND JOHN HURST ADAMS, PRESIDING BISHOP OF THE SEVENTH EPISCOPAL DISTRICT OF THE AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, ON THE OCCASION OF “BISHOP ADAMS APPRECIATION WEEK” BEGINNING ON FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6, 1998, AT THE MARRIOTT HOTEL IN CHARLESTON.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly have learned that Bishop Adams will be honored during “Bishop Adams Appreciation Week” beginning on Friday, February 6, 1998, at the Marriott Hotel in Charleston, to commemorate fifty years as a pastor and twenty five years as Bishop; and

Whereas, Bishop Adams was elected the 87th Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1972 and was assigned to the Tenth Episcopal District (Texas) where he served eight years; and

Whereas, Bishop Adams also served eight years in the Second Episcopal District (Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina) and four years in the Sixth Episcopal District (Georgia) before being assigned to the Seventh Episcopal District (South Carolina); and

Whereas, Bishop Adams earned an A.B. degree from Johnson C. Smith University, S.T.B. and S.T.M. degrees from Boston University and has matriculated study at Harvard University and Union Theological Seminary; and

Whereas, Bishop Adams has the undying love and support of his wife, Dr. Dolly D. Adams of New Orleans, who currently serves as Episcopal Supervisor of the Seventh Episcopal District (South Carolina) and their three children, Gaye D. Adams Massey, Jann H. Adams-Brogdon and Madelyn Rose Adams-Cobb; and

Whereas, Bishop Adams’ steadfast and untiring leadership within the African-American community has paved the way for ecumenical development and ministerial alliances that have strengthened the moral integrity of our state; and

Whereas, Bishop Adams was the founder of the Congress of National Black Churches and originator of the Institute on Church Administration and Management; and

Whereas, Bishop Adams’ many prestigious honors include: B’nai B’rith Man of the Year (1964), Urban League Man of the Year (1965), National Association for Equal Opportunity Leadership Award (1982), Distinguished Alumni Award Boston University and chosen as one of Ebony Magazine’s “Fifteen Great Black Preachers in America” (1984); and

Whereas, Bishop Adams has shown steadfast leadership and commitment to his Church and the people of this state and nation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize the Right Reverend John Hurst Adams, presiding Bishop of the Seventh Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, on the occasion of “Bishop Adams Appreciation Week” beginning on Friday, February 6, 1998, at the Marriott Hotel in Charleston.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Right Reverend John Hurst Adams.
