Board of Selectmen

Town of Durham

30 Meeting House Road

Durham, CT 06422

Dear First Selectwoman Maryann P. Boord;

At the Durham Senior Citizens Board meeting on April 22, 2004, there was a discussion to have a much-needed Senior Center in the Town of Durham.

On March 27, 2004, a site visitation Committee went to both the Eick Property and the Durham Rod and Gun Club. The Durham Rod and Gun Club proved to be most exciting. There are scenic trails, flat land that would support walkers and all outside activities and games. There are many clever seniors that could perform all sorts of woodworking improvements or renovations to the site and provide the center with benches, tables and chairs.

It could be a center for intergenerational programs where seniors could pass on their skills to younger generations.

The Senior Citizens Board would greatly appreciate the Board of Selectmen’s support for such an undertaking. The Board has funds in the amount of $245,000, to finance this endeavor.

Respectfully submitted,

Henry Coe

Chairman

DURHAM SENIOR CITIZENS BOARD

Regular Meeting Minutes

September 16, 2004

Present: Elaine Melvin, Shirley Bielefield, Henry Coe, and Henry Robinson.

Also present: John Hogarth, Amy Zitka from the Middletown Press, Gwen Clark Library liaison, Sherry Hill, Janet Muraca and Eileen Murphy

Absent: George Zeeb, Howard Kelly, Althea Parmelee and Mary DiMella.

This was the first meeting for new member John Hogarth. He is the Director of Senior Affairs/Human Services Department in Meriden, CT.

The September meeting was held in the Human Services room at the Town Hall on September 16, 2004 and called to order by Chairman Henry Coe at 1:42 P.M.

The agenda was amended so that Gwen Clark could speak first. So moved.

Gwen is a library volunteer for seniors. Jan Muraca met with Gwen Clark and Valerie______, the Director, to see what Durham's seniors would like their library to offer. They now deliver books to Mauro Meadows and she suggested several different ideas on what they can offer. Henry Coe asked if Gwen could get more specific ideas and put on the agenda for Octobers meeting to discuss further. All agreed.

Motion to approve the Minutes for May 2004 meeting was requested by Hank Robinson and seconded by Elaine Melvin. Unanimously approved.

Jan Muraca spoke on utilizing the senior bus. In August it is seldom used and would like to see more trips planed to more interesting places. Much discussion followed.

Henry Coe wanted to know from Ellen Lawrence how trips were decided upon and if Middletown had similar restrictions.

Jan Muraca said that the hearing screenings were arranged for October 15, 2004 at 10 A.M. at the Durham Library. This will be done on a quarterly basis not monthly. The screening time for each individual would be about ten minutes.

Sherry Hill talked about bowling, but no one was interested in pursuing this activity.

The painting classes are ready to go. Lois______is holding 2 to 21/2 hours per session for 6 weeks. They will be held on Thursday mornings, limited to ten students per class. Seniors can sign-up through the web-site or with Jan Muraca. Should there be a $3.00 fee per class?

Sherry Hill will check into movies to be shown at the library. Shirley Bielefield asked if hot lunches would be served at the Korn School. Elaine Melvin will check into this. It was decided by the Board that the menu would probably not be appropriate for seniors and therefore not to look into this matter. Interested seniors could join in Middlefield's program.

Janet Muraca and Henry Coe said there was to be an election of officers in October 2004.

Deb Reed of DMYFS would like to see more seniors involved with the Youth and Family Services. Elaine Melvin mentioned mentoring, crafts, music and perhaps drawing. Jan Muraca mentioned a reading program.

Sherry Hill was excited about her seniors exercise classes. She has 15 Durham seniors interested in a yoga class. The cost of the class is $35.00 per hour. The class can be modified for those with disabilities who cannot sit or lay down easily. Non residents can pay $3.00 per class to help defray costs.

A motion was made to have Sherry Hill charge $3.00 per yoga class by Shirley Bielefield and seconded by Hank Robinson.

Hank Robinson would like to have a revenue account set up in the Senior Board budget for this receivable. Henry Coe asked Eileen Murphy to draft a letter to the Finance Officer requesting this be done. Sherry Hill was asked to go ahead with the program and the fees starting on October 4, 2004. A motion was made to accept by Hank Robinson and was seconded by Elaine Melvin. Henry Coe stated all in favor.

A motion to charge $3.00 per class for the painting classes was requested.

Hank Robinson motioned to establish revenue line item expenditure in the Senior Budget to track revenues. Elaine Melvin seconded this motion. No discussion followed. All in favor.

It was decided to wait on swimming for seniors at the YMCA. The weather and snow-delays with the schools would affect the program. They would wait for a letter on how the school delays would be handled.

It was decided not to support a $50.00 contribution to supply balloons to the Red Hat Society for a YFS event on October 16, 2004.

Henry Coe asked for any new business. There was none brought before the board.

Hank Robinson called for an end to the meeting, Elaine Melvin seconded.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:54 pm.

The Senior Board Committee has decided to begin charging for certain activities to help defray costs and to offer more interesting and varied programs. We are respectfully requesting that you establish a new line number for this revenue in our budget.

Please let us know what information, if any, you will need to grant this request.
