Course description:Methods of integration; applies calculus, elements of analytic geometry, improper integrals, sequences, and series. The sequence MAT 270, 271, 272 may be substituted to satisfy requirements for MAT 290 and 291.
Enrollment requirements:Pre-requisites: MAT 265 or 270 with C or better; Students with credit for MAT 291 may not enroll in MAT 271

For MAT 271 you will definitely need a recitation notebook and an access code to the online homework. We will be using MyMathLab this semester. There are links to the textbook from the homework. They sell all three of these as an ASU packet.Or you can buy them separately. The ISBN for the physical text is 9780558752491. At the bookstore the package sells for $134.75The book by itself costs $96.50 new and $72.50 used. If you buy the online mymathlab access it costs $91.30 by itself. The recitation notebook costs $26.75. You must get the recitation book and mymathlab access one way or the other. I think thepackage at the ASU bookstore is probably the best way to go.( However, if you had MAT 270 last semester here and you used mymathlabyour access code should still be good.)
Graphing Calculator: A graphing calculator is required for this course.Examples of highly recommended models are the TI 83 and 84.. Calculators with QWERTY keyboards or those that do symbolic algebra, such at the Casio FX2, Casio 9970Gs, TI-89, TI-92, or HP 50G cannot be used in class or during an exam.

Attendance Policy:
- Attendance is mandatory and will be taken daily
- A maximum of 6 absences is allowed for this class, including the recitation section meetings.
- There are no “excused” absences other than for school-sanctioned activities or religious holidays.

Grading Scale:This course utilizes +/- grading.

Recitations & Teaching Assistants: You must attend lectures and your scheduled recitation each week. You are not permitted to attend other recitation meetings since there is not room to accommodate these moves. Bring your recitation workbook with you weekly. Your recitation score will count as 15% of your total grade.
Technology: Recitations will allow students to improve conceptual understanding in a collaborative work environment. Three of the recitations will utilize technology as instructional tools to allow students to explore core concepts.

Homework: There will be a combination of written and online homework for this course. No late work is accepted.
- Written homework: We may have some written homework as the semester progresses.
- Online homework: Most of our homework is online. Many short, basic skills-oriented problems are assigned through the MyMathLab software mymathlab.com. You need to get access to your course using the course ID

Many shorter problems are assigned through this software program to provide immediate feedback on numerical and algebraic solutions, as well as many interactive figures to supplement learning. The due dates for this work is listed on the site.
When you first get to the home page for mymathlab you should click on the browser check and install the necessary software if you need to.
If you have problems you should go to the site 247pearsoned.custhelp.com and see if they can help you.
Quizzes: Short quizzes may be given in lecture or recitation on occasion. Quizzes will cover recent lecture material and may or may not be announced in advance. No make-up quizzes will be given. Missed quizzes will count as 0's in the student's grade.
Tests: Each test counts as 15% of the overall grade. Students will take their Tests 1, 2, and 3
in the classroom. On test days the class will have another 25 minutes passed their official class time. Make sure you allow for this on test days! You will have 75 minutes for each of the chapter tests!
Makeup tests: Make up tests are given at the discretion of the instructor and only in the case of verified medical or other documented emergencies. Students should notify the instructor before the test is given if possible. Call the Math Department Office (480) 965-3951 and leave a message or directly notify the instructor. If the event is not an emergency, the instructor must be notified in advance to request a make up. The instructor is not required to accommodate you.
Class Expectations
- Come to class on time daily with notes and a calculator
- Ask questions or come to office hours if you'd like further explanation or examples
- Review your notes daily to prepare for quizzes and upcoming tests
- Read the text in advance to prepare for the next day's new material
- Leave cell phones or other electronics off and put away while in the classroom
If another student's behavior is distracting you in class, please inform him/her and me.
If your behavior is distracting others in class you may be asked to leave.
Repeat offenders may be dropped from the course.

Course Withdrawal: A student may withdraw from a course with a grade of W during the withdrawal period. The instructor's signature is not required. It is a student’s responsibility to verify that that they have in fact withdrawn from a class.
The grade of Incomplete: A grade of incomplete will be awarded only in the event that a documented emergency or illness prevents the student who is doing acceptable work from completing a small percentage of the course requirements. The guidelines in the current general ASU catalog regarding a grade of incomplete will be strictly followed.
Instructor-Initiated Drop: At the instructor's discretion, any student who has not attended class during the first week of classes may be administratively dropped from the course. However, students should be aware that non-attendance will NOT automatically result in their being dropped from the course. Thus, a student should not assume they are no longer registered for a course simply because they did not attend class during the first week. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of their registration status.
Final Exam Make-up Policy: The final exam schedule listed in the Schedule of Classes will be strictly followed. Exceptions to the schedule and requests for make-up final examinations can be granted only by the Department Chair, Associate Department Chair, or the Director of First Year Mathematics, and for one of the following reasons:
1. Religious conflict (erg., the student celebrates the Sabbath on Saturday)
2. The student has more than three exams scheduled on the same day as the math final
3. There is a time conflict between the math final and another final exam.
Honor Policy: The highest standards of academic integrity are expected of all students. The failure of any student to meet these standards may result in suspension or expulsion from the University or other sanctions as specified in the University Student Academic Integrity Policy. Violations of academic integrity include, but are not limited to, cheating, fabrication, tampering, plagiarism, or facilitating such activities.
The grade of XE: A grade of XE is reserved for "failure for academic dishonesty." The XE grade may be petitioned after 1 year.
