Introduction to Systems Analysis and Design

Course Description

An examination of business operations concerned with the design and maintenance of forms, records and office systems, to include the study of system input/output, work flow planning, office layout, work measurement and types of business procedure specifications. Information retrieval research will also be included. Basic tools of systems analysis are introduced, such as the systems flowchart, decision tables, GANNT charts and dataflow diagrams.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1.  Utilize a comprehensive vocabulary pertaining to information systems.

2.  Explain the functions, goals and outputs of each phase of the system development life cycle.

3.  Describe the functions of the systems analyst for each of the SDLC phases.

4.  State the principals of structured analysis and design.

5.  Construct a simple system flowchart, data structure diagrams and process diagrams.

6.  Describe the difference between “logical” and “physical” as they apply to systems analysis.

7.  Decide on and design an appropriate fact gathering technique for a particular situation.

8.  Construct an accurate set of leveled data flow diagrams.

9.  Use structured English, decision trees, decision tables and reduced decision tables.

10.  Explain the steps that an analyst must take to define a new database.

11.  Perform the tasks necessary to create the four system models: current physical model, current logical model, new logical model, new physical model.

12.  List the criteria that should be applied in order to evaluate a hardware or software supplier.

13.  Read and interpret a complex structure chart.

14.  Evaluate a design based on cohesion, coupling, factoring and error reporting.

15.  Design clear and effective reports, source documents, input and output screens and screen menus.

16.  Explain why system security is needed for a business system.

17.  Describe the analyst’s responsibilities during the coding, testing, conversion and maintenance phases of a system.

A maximum of 15 extra credit points can be earned by completing any of the case studies at the end of a chapter for 5 points each. Each case study must come from a different project and may not be one assigned by the instructor. All extra credit is due by April 11.

COURSE POLICIES

Attendance Policy

Students are expected to attend all classes and contribute in the class. The student has the responsibility for their own learning and, by the nature of the class, contribute to the learning of their fellow classmates. Attendance will be taken each night. A student will be marked absent if the tardiness is 10 minutes or more. The student is responsible for obtaining material and information they may have missed on class days when he/she is absent. This can be done by contacting a classmate or the instructor.

Late Assignment Policy

All assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the date listed in the syllabus. Any assignment one week late will be docked 10%, any assignment two weeks late will be docked 30%, and any assignment over two weeks late will receive a zero (0). The instructor may take into account extenuating circumstances, at the instructor’s discretion.

Testing Policy

Students are expected to take all tests and the final exam as scheduled. Makeup exams will be provided only in extenuating circumstances with the student required to provide a detailed written explanation with proof of the extenuating circumstances. Examples include illness and company travel. The student must contact the instructor within the following week regarding the absence and to arrange the make up examination.

Honesty Policy

Cheating or plagiarizing will absolutely not be tolerated at Southwestern Michigan College. Any student found cheating or plagiarizing material in any manner may be assigned a failing semester/session grade in this course. A second such incident while at SMC could result in suspension or expulsion from this institution. A student found in violation of this section of the syllabus will not be allowed to drop this course. Additional detail regarding cheating and/or plagiarism may be found elsewhere in this syllabus.

PROJECT ASSIGNMENT

The instructor will assign class members into teams of 2 or 3. Each team will be responsible for determining a project where they will have the opportunity to apply the systems analyst skills they are learning in this class. Each team will present their project to the class at the end of the semester. Each team member will be required to pull their own weight and assist their team members. The instructor must approve all projects by the end of class on February 7.

Teams will be communicated after our second week of class but before our third week of class.

ASSIGNMENT/CLASS SCHEDULE

Make sure your name, student ID, and exercise number appear in the upper-left corner. If an exercise has multiple sheets, then staple them together. Do not staple different assignments together. Disorganized assignments (pages out of order, mislabeled, unreadable, etc.) will receive a grade of zero (0). If there are multiple sheets to be handed in, sequence them according to the order you were told to print them in the exercise. Some exercises are to be handed in on a floppy disk.
