NATIONAL PARK WEEK April 16-24

Free Entrance at All National Parks

National Park Week is Sat. April 16 through Sun. April 24. All 394 parks run by the National Park Service will offer free entrance that week.

This includes west Texas parks like Fort Davis National Historic Site and Big Bend National Park. Take your families to the parks during these 9 entrance-free days. Enjoy exploring the outdoors and learning about our historical heritage. Kids can do the Junior Ranger Program and earn a shiny badge or a cloth patch. Fort Davis NHS has a brand new Junior Ranger program, and it’s free for kids any time you bring them to the park!

This year’s theme of National Park Week is Healthy Parks, Healthy People. The aim is to highlight the role of national parks and other public lands in the growing international movement to address the connection between human and environmental health.

At Fort Davis NHS you can take a self-guided tour throughrestored historic buildings, learn about the soldiers who served 1854-1891, including the Buffalo Soldiers, and enjoy the hiking trails. Enter to WIN a FREE BOOK at the Fort Davis NHS Visitor Center! At Big Bend National Park, enjoy hiking, cycling, and river running (permit required).

During National Park Week, entrance fees only are waived---not camping fees or certain permit fees. For information, call Fort Davis NHS at 432-426-3224 ext. 220 or Big Bend NP at 432-477-2251.

Other entrance free days in 2011 will be: Tues. June 21 (first day of summer), Sat. September 24 (National Public Lands Day), and November 11-13 (Veterans Day weekend).

Are you looking for a meaningful volunteer activity? You can help maintain your park or be a docent in living history clothing. The National Park Service is always looking for an extra hand. If you are interested, please call the park.
