Course Description: BUSN 6630, Management of Operations
This course is concerned with the production and delivery of goods and services. It provides an overview of a variety of key Operation Management issues including scheduling, capacity determination, facility location and layout, distribution and related topics. The use of model-assisted decision making is emphasized. Restriction: Restricted to graduate majors and NDGR majors with a sub-plan of NBA or NBD within the Business School. Max hours: 3 Credits.This is a Hybrid course. The hybrid design is one classroom session and one set of online requirements each week. The classroom session will consist of a combination of lectures, discussions, presentations and an exam. The online sessions will be a combination of video lectures, downloading of assignments, uploading answers to assignments, independent research, and communications between students.

Course Objectives.
This course will survey concepts, methods, and strategies commonly used in the management of operations. Recognition of problems, application of techniques, and communication of results are emphasized through lectures, assignments, and exams. The approach to the material in this course will include the progressive objectives of a basic understanding of the underlying concepts of operations, a proficiency in the application of tools to operations problems, an ability to formulate, evaluate, and critique operational strategies, and an exposure to a selection of operations environments. This course should provide a student the capability to independently acquire a workable solution to commonly encountered operations problems or to be an effective leader or contributor in a team effort dealing with operations issues.General Policies:

Course Design.
This course contains in-class sessions, reading material, online videos, quiz assignments, homework assignments, memo assignments, exam and a project. Course grade is based solely on student’s performance in the grade measures of quiz assignments, homework assignments, memo assignments, exam and project. Grades are not negotiated. No curves. No extra credit. In calculating course grades, normal rounding conventions are used.The rounding convention used in this course: a number, X, with a value 1.5≤X<2.5 is rounded to 2.0 if rounding to the unit digit. This rounding convention will be used for calculations in this course and especially related to grades, assignments and exam.
The Quiz assignments and Homework assignmentswill be submitted through Canvas. There will be Memo Assignments submitted through Canvas uploaded as a PDF. There will be an in-class exam. There will be a project at the end of the course which consists of an individual report and a team presentation. In addition to in-class sessions, learning resources are available to the student to aid in understanding the material and working the assignments which include online videos found at the website [MDHarper.com], textbook required readings, the Red Book as a reference, and student discussions on Canvas.
AQuiz assignment, Homework assignment and Memo assignment for a topic will be made available on Canvas. The Quiz assignment is designed to cover basic material. The Homework assignment is designed to apply a problem-solving approach to operations problems. The Memo assignment is designed to communicate results from a worked operations problem to an outside client requesting the work and to an internal party documenting the approach taken in obtaining the results. When the assignments are available, the learning resources including the online videosfound at the website [MDHarper.com] should be fully utilized to complete each assignment before the next class period.
Class sessions will consist of discussions, worked problems and questions about the material. Material related to the Quiz assignments will emphasize mechanics. Material related to Homework assignments will emphasize understanding the material and applying a problem-solving approach. Material related to Memo assignments will emphasize communicating results in a business environmentandin an internal support document. The assignments will not be worked in class or answers will not be given out in class before they are due.
Course Management.
Although online material is available and assigned as a learning aid, class attendance is required. Each student is responsible for the content of each class in the course as well as the required material which includes required readings and online videos.Respectful behavior before, during, and after class sessions is expected which includes refraining from talking during lectures, arriving late, leaving early, use of cell phones, conducting work during lectures, asking inappropriate questions during lectures, or disrupting the learning process during lectures. Respectful behavior is expected during exams which includes refraining from carrying on a conversation with other students or me, listening to music, use of cell phones, or disrupting the exam time for other students.
Collaboration is encouraged throughout this course except for exam and composition of memo assignments. However, each student is responsible to submit work based on their understanding and ability. Collaboration is not required. Lack of collaboration or failure to attend class does not eliminate a student’s responsibility to submit assignments when due. Collaboration can include study groups utilizing external and internal sources. Although groups are not formally organized in this course, study groups organized by the students are encouraged. The only exception to collaboration is exams. No collaboration is allowed on exams.

Although there are no prerequisites for this course, knowledge of mathematics, statistics and Excel will be a benefit.Reading Material:

Communication and Office Hours.
I will be available before and after each class period for students to ask specific questions.I will have office hours from 4:00pm to 5:00pm on Monday and Wednesday in my office #4205 in the Business School Building 4th floor. No appointment is required or made. I will meet with students on a first come first served basis. Office hours are provided to answer specific question as an aid in understanding the material. During office hours, I will not respond to requests such as grading assignments, working your homework for you or with you, giving lectures, or giving out answers to assignments. Office hours are not the only source of help for understanding the material. I expect a student to utilize the multiple sources available in this course in addition to office hours. Respect the time a student has during office hours and do not interrupt.
Discussions are provided on Canvas for students to discuss course material. Use the Canvas discussions for asking questions about the course material, answering questions about the course material, organizing study groups, making announcements about study groups, and other communications helpful for learning.
Email should only be used for necessary communication with me that does not include material already stated in the syllabus, announcements made in Canvas, or questions about the material that could be asked through the discussion provided in Canvas. Since accessing the original source is more effective in communications, I will direct you to appropriate sources if necessary. Any student email to me must only be to the email address [ ] and must contain “BUSN 6630” in the subject area. If this address is not used, I may not receive the email or read the email. I will read and respond to emails Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights after 9pm.
In summary, I am available in various manners Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I am available before and after class to answer questions in person. I am not available other times in person or by email.
Submission of Quiz Assignments and Homework Assignments.
Quiz assignments and homework assignments will be assigned and graded. Quiz assignments and homework assignments will be available on Canvas and submitted through Canvas. No late assignments are accepted. Answers to assignments posted on Canvas after the due date.Submit answers to assignments through Canvas. Quiz questions and homework questions will be posted on Canvas at appropriate times during the course. Carefully follow this procedure. Download the questions from Canvas which will be in a Word file. Obtain answers for all the questions. Only when all the answers are ready to submit, submit all the answers through Canvas at one time. Each student is responsible to submit answers through Canvas correctly, completely and on time. Answers may be submitted only once. Assignments submitted will be accepted as an entire assignment and graded as an entire assignment. Once you begin submission, you have only 60 minutes to submit all the answers to an assignment only if all the answers are submitted on or before the due date and time for the assignment. The due date and time are strictly enforced by Canvas. Canvas will not allow submission after the due date and time even during the 60-minute time window. The entire assignment must be submitted on or before the due date and time indicated. No late assignments are accepted. Assignments not submitted have a grade of zero. The answers to the quiz and homework assignments will be posted online after the due date. No partial credit.

Any grading errors on assignments should be resolved as soon as possible. No corrections to graded material will be made after the end of the course.
Collaboration is encouraged to aid in learning the material but not required. Although collaboration is encouraged, students are expected to perform their own work. The quiz and homework assignments are not intended to be a complete coverage of the material.
Memo Assignments.
The memo assignments are small case studies. I will make available an “Assignment Memo” online at appropriate times that will initiate work from each student. For each assignment memo, a student will submit two memos, a “Response Memo” and a “Technical Memo.” Each memo is limited to only one page. Submit both memos in one PDF file.Design the “Response Memo” for the business environment that effectively communicates a professional response to the party requesting the work in the assignment memo. The response memo shall be succinct but adequate as well as originally composed, professionally prepared, and following a common format. Design the “Technical Memo” to describe the approach and quantitative methods utilized in obtaining the results presented in the response memo. The technical memo shall contain enough detail to support, describe, and adequately generate the technical portion of the response memo. Each memo must be self-contained, complete, descriptive, succinct and limited to one page. Generally, a ‘self-contained’ memo would not reference material in the other memo; a ‘complete’ memo would contain all the content to adequately achieve its objective; a ‘descriptive’ memo would contain a presentation that has literary competency; and a ‘succinct’ memo would not contain superfluous or inappropriate material.
The composition of the memos should reflect their different audiences, objectives, and scenarios as defined in the assignment memo. Although the response and technical memos are self-contained, they must correspond. Any item presented in the response memo must be supported in the technical memo. Consider the response memo an external communication document designed for the business environment and the technical memo an internal support document for internal review and support for the response memo.
Each memo must be no more than one page in length. Both memos must be submitted together in one PDF file. Submit only two pages, no title page, no attachments, no appendices, and submit only through Canvas. Both memos are required to be composed in a professional manner (typed, dated, etc.) adhering to the following format where the student provides the information in italics.
