JOB DESCRIPTION

I. IDENTIFICATION

Position Title: School Crossing Guard

Dept/Division: Police/Field Services

Reports To: Captain/Field Services

Supervises: None

II. JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, assures safety of children by monitoring and signaling

motorist and children when it is safe to cross the street.

III. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assist children in safely crossing the street on their way to and from school. Keep children on the curb until there is a sufficient break in traffic to allow safe crossing. Counsel children regarding unsafe behavior. Report and discuss unsafe behavior of children to school officials. Summon emergency help if needed, such as, police or fire. Document and report school crossing violations made by motorists including accidents and failure to obey traffic signals.

IV. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of traffic laws concerning pedestrians and vehicular movement. Ability to work in and around busy traffic environments. Ability to obtain vital information if a accident should occur, such as a license plate number. Ability to cooperate with school officials. Ability to communicate verbally with children and adults. Ability to be friendly but firm with children. Ability to recognize potential hazards and to safely direct children away from such hazards. Skill in perceiving vehicle speeds and distances in order to reasonably stop and allow children to safely cross streets or intersections. Ability to get to designated location reliably. Knowledge and ability to summon emergency help if needed. Knowledge and ability to properly use prescribed equipment, such as a stop sign and whistle. Knowledge and ability to notify the Police Department if unable to report to duty.


V. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

High school diploma or equivalent desired.

VI. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Ability to perform the following activities:

B. Lifting, carrying and holding up to 5 pounds.

C. Frequent standing and walking on varied terrain such as uneven or slippery

surfaces.

D. Ability to see and hear traffic and children.

E. Ability to verbally communicate in a speaking voice and to shout warnings

as needed.

F. Ability to work in varied environmental conditions.

De Pere School Crossing Guards work:

September through June

1.5 hours a day

7.5 hours a week

270 hours – maximum – during school year (not counting sick leave, etc.)

There are approximately 180 days per school year.
