MUSICIAN RESPONSIBILITIES
GENERAL
· Music is an integral part of the Walk to Emmaus Weekend. The Weekend Musician should be familiar with the progression of the talks and the flow of the Weekend so that appropriate music can be selected for each time where music is needed. The Weekend Musician should closely monitor the atmosphere and mood in the conference room to provide the right type of music to move the Pilgrims to where they need to be for the next part of the Weekend. This is especially true when there is a significant shift. For example, following the evening poster party, music may be needed to ease the transition to the chapel service that follows.
· The Musician(s) are responsible for the music during team meetings and on the weekend as outlined on pages 33 through 35 of the Director’s Manual. The Music Director’s Checklist for each day of the Walk is shown on pages 35 through 37 of the Director’s Manual.
· The Detailed Schedule also outlines the duties of the Musician(s) in detail for the weekend. This schedule includes all of the items shown on the Music Director’s Checklist, but in more detail.
· It should also be noted that the Detailed Schedule contains a significant amount of additional music during the weekend. This music is used for “filler” and to bridge between the various segments of the Walk. This additional music may or may not be needed as the weekend progresses. Please consult with the Lay Director before the Walk begins and during the weekend to see if this additional music is needed. Musician should be sensitive to the mood of the participants and know what is scheduled to happen next.
· The Emmaus Community, not the Musician, is responsible for the music during the Apostolic Hour Worship Service and the leading of “Jesus, Jesus” for the Candlelight.
· The Illinois Heartland Walk to Emmaus Community has a copyright license with Christian Copyright Licensing, Inc. (CCLI). Our license does not cover copying musical arrangements or sheet music. You may make song sheets or overheads for your use during team meetings, on the Weekend or at Community Gatherings - provided you follow the rules associated with our CCLI license. Making unauthorized copies is against the law. Christian songwriters are supported in part by the royalties paid for the rights to copy their work. Any copies you make should be reported to the Community Music Chairperson, since the Community is required to file a report with CCLI from time to time. The Community Music Chairperson has a copy of the applicable CCLI guidelines.
Team Meetings
· The Musician shall lead the music for all team meetings, including the worship and communion services. The Musician will need to work with the musician from the other team to determine how you will handle the worship and communion services for times when both teams meet together.
· Practice “Sing Hallelujah” at the team meetings for all talk previews except Priorities. In addition, the Lay Director may have a theme scripture or song for the weekend. Use the theme song during team meetings so the team is able to sing it. Also, practice the grace song at the Team Meetings prior to the lunch break. The team should be given ample opportunity during team formation to learn all of the music to be used on the weekend.
· Provide music during the Team Anointing Ceremony. There will be a standard worship service with Communion on the night of the anointing for the team. The musicians for a given set of Walks may trade the music responsibilities during the anointing services, so each musician can participate in the anointing service with their team without having to worry about music.
Weekend Setup
· Set up and test all instruments, stands, overhead projector, etc. Make sure that you have extra strings, picks, etc.
Weekend
· The Weekend Musician should work with the Assistant Lay Directors to provide recorded wake-up music each morning, if needed.
· The Community Music Coordinator provides the music for the Sponsors’ Hour on Thursday night, not the Weekend Musician.
· Provide meditative music or solo in the Chapel on Thursday and Friday evenings following the meditation. These solos should be selected carefully, so they fit well with the topic of the evening meditation.
· Teach ”Sing Hallelujah”, “De Colóres” and blessings for before and after meals on Friday morning. The history and reasons behind using the songs should be shared, particularly for De Colóres. This information can be found in Chapter 8 of the Team Manual. De Colóres should be sung primarily in Spanish. English lyrics can add to Pilgrims' understanding, but should not be used in place of the Spanish lyrics. The words for all songs except the grace song, are in the Pilgrims' Guide (purple book) on pages 25, 37, 40 and 41.
Weekend, Continued
· Lead ”Sing Hallelujah” before each Talk except the Priority Talk. On Friday, sing only the first verse of “Sing Hallelujah.” On Saturday, add a second verse (I give my whole life to the Lord). There is to be no music after the Talk.
· Lead “De Colóres” and meal graces at all meals except breakfast on Friday.
· Teach the communion responses on Saturday morning and lead the communion service during the Means of Grace Talk. (Dying Moments) The standard Illinois Heartland Communion liturgy should be used for the Communion service conducted during the Talk. The sung responses are found on page 2 and 3 of the Illinois Heartland Emmaus song book Allelujah, He Is Coming. Consult the Weekend Spiritual Director to see how much music will be needed for this service. Some prefer background music during dying moments -- others prefer silence during that time.
· The Musician should consult with the Spiritual Director to see how he/she wants to conduct the chapel time after the Candlelight. Some want only two or three meditative or instrumental songs, while others may want background music for the whole time in the chapel. You may wish to do this yourself or invite other musicians to help out. CD's or tapes with vocal or instrumental music can also be used.
· Lead “We Are One in the Spirit” prior to the Closing service.
· Provide music for the Closing. The Musician should lead the Community in singing "De Colóres" as the Pilgrims enter the Chapel for the closing. There will be a standard worship service with Communion following the closing service.
· Provide music during the weekend as shown on the Detailed Schedule and as requested by the Lay Director.
