200X / AORNs Presidential Commission for Patient Safety (national appointment)One of a core team of 12 perioperative nurses from around the nation requested for appointment on AORNs Presidential Commission for Patient Safety. This core group represents all perioperative nurses throughout the nation in paving the way to standardize initiatives focused on enhanced patient safety throughout the perioperative arena. Accomplishments: Partnered with DoD Patient Safety and AORN to integrate perioperative specific information into the TeamSTEPPS tool kit for national dissemination (this effort resulted in the development of an AORN Patient Handoff Toolkit); Co-developed/authored 4 National Toolkits for AORN: Medication Administration, Fire Safety, Patient Handoff; and Correct Site Surgery; Medication Toolkit -> all nationally disseminated; Authored 2 practice guidelines; and Co-authored 2 position statements.

Program Development
1993 – 1994Developed, implemented and managed an Open Heart Program at XX Medical Center as part of a three million dollar Cardio-Thoracic Initiative (May 93-Dec 94). The program design included an in-depth Open Heart Reference Book, development of surgeon’s preference cards, instrument purchase and creation of instrument inventory sheets, step-by-step technical instructions (“how to guidesheets”), and Open Heart Sterile Custom Pack construction. An intensive one-on-one instruction on open heart standard operating procedures and scrub/circulating responsibilities were developed with associated inservices focused on specializedequipment and emergency protocols.
