“Los Pequenos” One Week Old
It is amazing how much the mind forgets when it comes to having babies, human and canine. I sort of remember spending three weeks sequestered in my room making sure the puppies made it through infancy and into toddlerhood. However, somehow all of the puppy cooing and cuteness just pushed that part of the puppy rearing right to the back closet in my mind, shut the door, locked three deadbolts, and threw away the key. I do leave the room to eat and to take Temperance to potty, but that is about it.
Making matters more boring is the fact that the entertainment in this establishment spends most of their time sleeping. Puppies are much more fun when they are awake and doing baby stuff. Ooh, or better yet when the little tikes are trying to hang on to the milk bar when Temperance decides she is going to roll over onto her other side… good times! Pebble has amazing gripping power and she can do a full 180 without missing a swallow. That girl has talent. This is reflected in her tremendous weight gain over the past six days. She has caught up with Aang and Drop who were 2.2 oz bigger than her at birth. She has only been out eaten by Spark who is a little pig.
Spark is also the noisy one. There is a screamer in every bunch and this litter it is him. Pick him up and he screams, put him on a nipple that isn’t his favorite and he cries while he eats, wake him up from a nap and he yells bloody murder. Great set of lungs on that one. He will make a fantastic alert dog one day. Somehow he still manages to out eat his siblings even while wasting valuable nursing time with his whining. I guess he must be multitasking. At any rate he is the biggest puppy and often tries to push the others off “his” nipple. I have no idea why he continues to try that with Pebbles since she never lets go even if he manages to flip her over.
Puppy school has started and is in full swing. The human pack has visited except for my uncle, grandmother, and little brother Aaron. So mom, who was my wonderful assistant during the whelping, Lisa, Kaylen, Seth, Kurt, Gerarney, and Tori have all been over and handled the pups. Temperance was her usual chill self and was serene but watchful as her kids were passed around during visiting hours. Even Spark was quiet while being held.
Supper puppy exercises were started on day two. We took a little trip to the vet Saturday so that the puppies’ dew claws could be removed. Devan, who was offended that I was not going to let her come watch, acted as if the Aang and Drop were going to bleed to death in the car on the way home. “There is blood all over this puppy! I am serial (kid for serious) it’s everywhere!” She has been a very good helper, usually. I can’t wait for their ear canals to open as she makes my noises CD sound like soft soothing music. These pups will not be phased by anything after spending six weeks with Devan.
Aang: black and tan parti male 11.6 oz. He has a lot of black on him!
Aang is an absolute sweetheart and has tan on the little bit of color under his tail so he is a black and tan parti. Hopefully he will not belton. Devan has decided that he is her favorite so she now carries him around like she did Dr. King (now Pixels) in Temperance’s first litter. I am sure he will be a great companion dog with a very laidback personality like his big brother.
Spark: black and tan pied (tri) male 12.0 oz. He will look like Romeo with a blaze.
Drop: black and tan pied (tri) with full collar male 12.0 oz. This boy will be flashy!
Drop is just adorable. He looks like he has eyebrows also so I guess the whole litter is black and tan but only time will tell for sure. It will be near to see him get silver on his one black leg. The cream, black, and white tail should be interesting also. I am hoping he is a show boy that we can keep in our breeding program. I wanted a black pied with a full collar and a blaze but I will take a black and tan. He is also very laid back and chill. Not much fussing during the super puppy exercises for him and Aang.
Pebble: black and tan pied (tri) female11.8 oz. Pretty girl with a feisty personality.
“Little” Pebble is now “same size as her brothers”Pebble. Her markings are gorgeous. I can’t wait to see what she looks like with her coat grown out. She has her very own little girl waiting for her so we have to get her use to bows and dresses (I’ll just snap a few pics while she is dressed up anyway) so she knows about playtime with an8 year old. Alas, that is weeks away.
See you next week!
