Summer Opportunities
The following are some of the many opportunities which the gifted program has received in order to disseminate to students. Students and parents should explore the websites in order to obtain more information regarding the summer programs and opportunities. This is not an endorsement of any particular program, just a list of what we hear about. Updated 2/11/13.
Educational Programs
Bonner Summer Fellows Program
The Bonner Foundation is a nationally renowned organization that fosters community service on college campuses. The College of New Jersey partners with the Bonner Foundation and hosts a pre-college summer program. Courses are available July 7-July 19 with courses ranging from American Cities and Suburbs, Introduction to Sociology, Finding your Voice in Art, Social and Legal Foundations of Special Education, etc.
Cost: $3500 (No financial aid is available)
Boston College Summer Experience Program
Open to students who have completed the 11th grade. Take college-level courses in subjects not available in your high school
Cost: $2058/3 credit class; $252/week for housing; $750/meal costs
Broadreach: Summer Adventures for Teenagers
Includes scuba, sailing, marine biology and wilderness programs. Students can earn up to three college credits and up to 55 hours of community service credits, depending on the program.

Carnegie Mellon: A Summer of Exploration

Cook Honors College: IUP
The Cook Honors College hosts IUP’s Summer Honors Program (SHP) where talented rising high school juniors and seniors get a first-hand look at life on campus. Half of your day will be spent in the interdisciplinary Honors Core Course and the other half you can choose from a wide array of courses, such as women’s studies, psychology, physics, forensics, English, etc. Program runs July 7th-July 20th.
Cost: $250 for two weeks (including housing, food, etc)
Cornell University Summer Program
Cornell offers a six-week program or two different three-week programs. Students can choose from numerous courses of study ranging from animal sciences, engineering, hotel management, history, law and politics and much more. Academic credits can generally be applied to an undergraduate degree at Cornell or other colleges.

Cornell University CATALYST Academy
The CATALYST Academy is a one-week (July 14-20) summer residential program for rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The mission of the CATALYST Academy is to advance diversity in engineering and its related disciplines. Therefore, applications from students from backgrounds (African American, Latino/a, or Native American) critically underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math are especially encouraged.
During the CATALYST Academy, Cornell University’s world- renowned faculty and graduate students lead participants in classes, lab sessions, and project research. Social events, panel discussions, and other out-of- classroom activities provide participants with opportunities to network informally with Cornell faculty, staff, and students.

Daniel Fox Youth Scholars Institute: LVC
A residential program for exceptional high school students who have completed 9th, 10th, or 11th grade. The institute is a one-week (June 17-21), non-credit program that enables exceptional high school students to preview college life. At the Daniel Fox Youth Scholars Institute, students live on campus or commute and take intensive workshops in the sciences, social sciences, or humanities, choosing from among many programs.

Emerson College: Arts and Communication Pre-College Credit Programs
July 8-August 10, 2012. For high school seniors, or exceptional juniors, that would like to earn college credit.
Two Arts and Communication Pre-College Credit Programs will be offered in Summer 2013:
- Film Production
- Film Writing
There are also pre-college studio programs in the following areas:

- Creative Writing
- Filmmaking
- Musical Theatre
- Stage design
- TV and film production
Also offered is a summer journalism institute as well as a political communication program.

Fashion Institute of Technology
The Fashion Institute of Technology’s Precollege Programs, a division of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, offers classes for high school students to explore art and design, business and technology majors and develop art and design portfolios. To fulfill its mission, Precollege Programs offers a wide variety of credit and non-credit courses to high school students, including courses taught by FIT faculty; online courses; and partnership programs with high schools in the New York City area.

Fulton Academy of Theatre
Classes cover all aspects of the theatre arts, both on stage and behind the scenes. Fulton’s Academy of Theatre increases the skills and knowledge of the student with the goal of becoming a professional theatre artist, as well as the student who is using the theatre arts to develop life skills

Harvard Summer School 2013

Application to the Secondary School Program is open to students who will graduate in 2013, 2014 or 2015.
Enroll in Harvard courses, studying alongside college and adult students at Harvard Summer School. Explore subjects not available at your high school and earn college credit. For application and admission criteria, see website. Early application is suggested, application available online. Application review begins in mid- February. Thereafter, applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and students are informed of a decision within 2 weeks. Financial aid application deadline is March 21.

Health Care Scholars Academy
The University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academyis a four-week program (June 23 to July 20) for 110 students who are interested in learning more about health care and health care careers. The program focuses on exposing students to the health care delivery system, learning about the variety of careers available in the field of health care, understanding current issues in health care, and incorporating what they learn in a medical profession. Students may only apply during their sophomore or junior year of high school.

iD Tech Camp
Award-winning computer camps and technology programs held at top universities. Kids and high school students gain essential skills that last long after summer camp ends! Week long summer tech camps are offered for ages 7-17 and a 2 week intensive teen academics camp for ages 13-18. Dates range depending on campus. Courses are offered in video game design, App programming, robotics engineering, and more!
PA camps are at Carnegie Mellon and Villanova University.

IU-13 Project SAIL
Local students can launch into advanced and innovative hands-on learning with Project SAIL. Project SAIL provides an exciting opportunity for students to delve into areas above and beyond their typical studies during weeklong summer camps.
Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth
Provides an academic challenge for students in numerous courses ranging from math and computer sciences to writing to medical/biology. Courses are offered at Johns Hopkins University in MD as well as Princeton University in NJ. Dates vary by program.

Julian Krinsky Camps and Programs
Julian Krinsky Camps & Programs are the world leader in summer programs. From sports and arts camps for middle school students to pre-college academic programs and summer internships for high school students, JKCP offer over 20 specialized experiences. Courses offered at Haverford College, University of PA, and Villanova University.
Dates range from June 3-August 30th. Students can choose from one week to eight weeks.

Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop
A two-week creative writing adventure for high school students.Two sessions available. Program dates June 23-July 26, 2013 or July 14-July 27th.

Keystone Boys State-Shippensburg University
Program participants (males only) will learn and practice the operations and procedures of the different branches of county, city and state legislatures. This program enables students to become more informed citizens by developing a working understanding of state and local government. June 23-June 29.Scholarships available if participant applies a month prior to the May 15th deadline.
Materials Information Society Materials Camp
ASM Materials Camp® Student Camps are for high school students with strong abilities in math and science who have completed their sophomore or junior years. Applicants need to have a basic knowledge of algebra, chemistry and physics, and also show a strong interest in applied science and demonstrate a desire to pursue a college major and career in engineering and/or materials science. Camps are offered in numerous locations including Lehigh University (July 8-12)

Middlebury College: The Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy (MMLA)
Intensive four-week residential camps specializing in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, and Spanish. Camp runs from June 23-July 18th. Camps are located at Green Mountain College, VT; Swarthmore College, PA; Pomona College, CA.
There is also a Beijing Academy which runs from June 24-July 18th.

Millersville University Tech Camp
The Millersville camps offer participants the opportunity to receive exciting hands-on experience with fascinating technology, while stimulating creative minds-on learning. Technology Camps are normally half-day, 15 hour per week sessions. Sessions include engineering, LEGO, etc. Dates vary by session.
Neuroscience Camp: Muhlenberg College
Brain Camp is a one-week residential summer experience for juniors going into their senior year interested in the inner-workings of the brain. Students at Brain Camp live in on campus at Muhlenberg College; attend hands-on workshops that explore brain anatomy, physiology, and development; and pioneer research projects in faculty laboratories.

New York University: Summer 2013 NYU Precollege Program
July 8th-August 17th, 2013
NYU Precollege offers rising high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to experience academic and student life at New York University. Students take college level courses for academic credit, which may be applied to a future degree.
Current high school freshmen may consider one of the Steinhardt Art, Music, and Theatre Summer Programs, depending on whether or not they meet the admissions criteria for their program of choice.

Penn Summer High School Programs
Penn Summer High School Programs, open to residential and commuting students, offer an outstanding academic challenge:
- Programs are built around courses taught by Penn faculty, scholars, and distinguished outside experts.

- Residential programs include academically based extracurricular activities such as SAT preparation workshops, a college writing series, and presentations about college admissions procedures

Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week
Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week is an intensive program that educates high school students about the American free enterprise system. Participants not only learn to appreciate our free enterprise system, but they also see from a practitioner’s perspective what it takes to be successful in an increasingly competitive global marketplace. Student companies simulate the actual operation of their own business for the equivalent of three years. Facing all of the decisions that real executives are confronted by, the student companies are mentored by dedicated business volunteers who serve as Company Advisors.

Penn State Summer Study Program
The pre-college 6½-week college credit program for high school students helps to prepare high school students for college. The program runs from June 25 to August 10th. There is also a shortened enrichment program offered which lasts 3.5 weeks but offers no college credit. Internships in sports marketing and child development are available.

Phillips Academy Andover: Summer Session 2012

A five-week summer academic enrichment program helping students achieve their educational goals. Not a remedial program or summer camp.
Over 60 courses available in the arts, English, mathematics, history, world language, philosophy, religion, and science. Cost: $8100

St. John’s College: Summer Academy

Open to rising high school juniors or seniors and to graduating seniors taking gap years.
Spend one to two weeks at St. John’s College exploring great ideas with other high school students. The Summer Academy offers participants a rich experience reading and discussing original texts in small discussion classes with faculty members experienced in guiding thoughtful and lively conversations. Students will learn to read texts closely, question their assumptions about the ideas they encounter in them; articulate their own ideas clearly through collaborative inquiry and dialogue, share insights, and listen actively.

State Police Youth Week: York College of PA
This six-day boot camp (June 9-15) is for students who wish to learn more about law enforcement or the military as a career. Students who apply should be physically fit, in good health, and have a good academic record. This is not a recreational camp! There will be classes in Pennsylvania Vehicle and Crime Codes, forensic sciences, radar, riot control, tactical drug operation through the use of specially trained dogs, weapon firing, and other police related skills. Eligible cadets, female or male student must have turned 15 yrs old by the start of camp & have not turned 18 yrs old by the end of camp.

Summer Institute for the Gifted
Aims to provide the highest quality educational and social opportunities for academically gifted and talented students through programs designed to meet their abilities and needs. Courses are offered at numerous college campuses, such as Yale University, UCLA, Bryn Mawr College, Emory University, etc. Courses taught in a wide variety of subject areas; Humanities, Math, Science, Technology, Multi-Disciplinary, Visual and Performing Arts, and Fitness and Recreation. Susquehanna is offering an exciting weeklong experience for talented high school writers with the opportunity to work in intensive, small-group workshops headed by nationally recognized authors.
The Writers’ Workshop is open to experienced writers entering 11th or 12th grade in the fall of 2013.
U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar
The United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar is a fast-paced, six-day experience for high achievers who have completed their junior year in high school. Summer Seminar teaches you about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics, and professional training play equally important roles in developing our nation’s leaders. If you think that you may be interested in pursuing an appointment to one of the nation’s service academies and serving your country as an officer, you should seriously consider attending the Naval Academy’s Summer Seminar. There are three different sessions in June to choose from.

Ware Institute for Civic Engagement (F&M)
Work with local community partners in order to intern and volunteer throughout the school year as well as the summer. There are also opportunities to obtain college credit. The Ware institute focuses on human rights and assisting those in need in Lancaster County.
Zoo America: Zoo Camp
ZooCamp is designed to provide creative opportunities for learning about the wonders of our natural world. Each day of ZooCamp is themed and is filled with up-close animal encounters, cool crafts and activities, guided zoo walks, snacks and lively discussions! Campers will have fun while exploring the wild world of animals! Choose from half-day or full-day.
