Art Collection News - Spring term 2010……
Picture a Story 2010 In March the Schools Library Service held their annual ‘Picture a Story’ event for KS1 & 2 pupils. This was the second Picture a Story joint venture with The County Art Collection. The guest speaker this year was Catherine Rayner, award winning illustrator and author. Original Pictures and 3D items from the County Art Collection were displayed together with copied pictures from the reading list books. The children were given an art trail to follow, the gallery was buzzing as up to 60 children searched out answers and clues relating to the books.
All the Art Collection items on display at this event are available to borrow for your school.
‘Picture A Story 2011’ – Guest speaker: Jackie Morris award winning author and illustrator.

Secondary School Librarian’s Continuing Professional Development meeting
The CPD session introduced the County Art Collection to a group of Secondary School Librarians. They learnt about the history of the Collection, how the loan service works and were shown where the Collection is stored. We were very lucky to have Jo Bustin, AST and Head of Art at Marlborough School at this session. At Marlborough School, the Librarian chooses the Art Collection pieces to borrow, they are displayed in the Library, giving the whole school access to view and use the art pieces for a range of subjects.
Jo gave a short talk about how her school uses the Art Collection. Jo then set a very simple art exercise based on two landscape paintings from the Collection, she asked us to make a small, very simple, individual collage using wool, tissue paper and cut off strips of coloured paper. Despite the look of fear on faces when she announced the task and much to everyone’s surprise the end results were extremely good !
The school library is a great place to display the art pieces from the Collection, it gives the whole school a chance to see and use the art . Display it on and above shelves or on free standing easels !

Tonwell St Mary’s School
Tonwell St Mary’s School are regular borrowers from the Collection, using the items they borrow for various projects. They used the silk wall hanging called ‘Sea’ to work with on this project.
‘The Silk hanging you loaned us really inspired the children to consider the movement of the waves. The finished outcomes were, in my opinion super, and I was proud of the children and myself for giving something new a go! ‘
Gareth Griffith Teacher at Tonwell St Mary’s

Northaw Cof E Primary School
Northaw Primary School borrowed two of our Michael Brennand Wood pieces and produced their own wonderful piece of work. The work was done by a mixed class of Yr’s 1 & 2 . The colours and sculpture were inspired by the Monet print.
