TheMulticulturalSumerInstitute(MSI)offersafour-weekacademic/residentialprogramforaboutfifty incomingfirst-yearstudents.Itenrollsstudentsfromavarietyofethnic,regional,andculturalbackgrounds whohaveexpressedinterestinissuesofmulticulturalism.Thus,MSIservestogiveitsdiversestudent bodyanintroductiontothe social.culturalandintellectualresourcesofSouthernCalifornia,aswellas familiarizestudentswiththeOxycommunityandsurroundingarea.
TheResidentAdvisorworkscloselywithotherMSIstaffmembersandstudentstofosteracommunity environmentwithintheresidencehallthatcontributestotheintellectual,socialandculturaldevelopment ofparticipants.TheResidentAdvisorassistsinimplementingavaluableco-curricularexperience.In addition, the Resident Advisor is responsible for community development, educational and social programming,policyenforcement,dutycoverage,advising,androlemodeling.Candidatesforthis positionshouldbeingoodacademicstandingwithapreferredGPAof3.0.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Community Development
•Workwithprogramstafftohelpdevelopandimplementvariousprogramsthatpromotean understandingofdiversityandsocialjusticeissuestoenhancetheMSIexperience.
•Adviseindividualsandgroups ofstudentswithinthehallandmakereferralstoOxyProfessionalStaff whennecessary.
•Facilitatethedevelopmentofacommunityenvironmentthatstimulatesstudentresponsibilityand accountability.
•Beavailableandaccessibletostudentsbyspendingadequatetimeinthehall.
•Participateintheimplementationofactivities,whichaddressthestudents'intellectual,social, recreational, and culturalneeds.
•ServeasarolemodelforMSIparticipants.
•Other duties asassigned.
Administrative
•Maintain hall recordsand files.
•Assume dutyprocedures.
•DevelopandmaintaincommunicationwiththeMS!StaffandFaculty,OfficeofResidenceandGreek LifeStaff,CleaningServices,FacilitiesManagement,CampusSafety,ComputerCenter,andCampus DiningStaff.
•MaintaincloseworkingrelationshipsandcommunicationwiththeMSIStaffthroughregularlyscheduled meetings.
•UnderstandCollegeandMS!ResidenceLifepoliciesandimplementtheminaknowledgeableandfair manner.
•ParticipateinallMSIstafftrainingandeducationalsessions.
•Other duties asassigned.
Environmental
•Provideasafeenvironmentforstudentsintheclassroom,workshops,andresidencehalls.
•FacilitatefiresafetyprogramminginconjunctionwiththeFacilitiesManagementandCampusSafety. Complete safety reports whennecessary.
•Helpcoordinatecheck-inandcheck-outproceduresforstudentsinthehall.
•WorkwithFacilitiesstaffonmaintenanceissues.
•Worktokeepthehallcleanandfosterasenseof "home"fortheresidents.
•Other duties as assigned
Personal
•Actinanhonest,conscientious,andprofessionalmanner,showingrespectforpersonsofallcultures, races,genders,religiousaffiliationsandspiritualidentities,sexualorientations,interestsandabilities. Refrainfrombecominginvolvedinactivitiesorencouragingnormsthatareindirectoppositiontothis principle.
•ServeasarolemodelbyabidingbyallOccidentalCollegepoliciesaslistedintheStudentHandbookand theMSIStaffManual.Maintaina levelof conductconsistentwiththatexpectedof aCollegeemployee.
NOTE:AdditionalemploymentisnotallowedduringMSItrainingandprogramdates.AResidentAdvisor mayNOTcontinueinthepositionifs/heisplacedonacademicordisciplinaryprobationorifs/heis subject tosuspension
