*Friday we will have a Pink Out Day. Students are encouraged to wear pink!

*The sign-up sheet for conferences was sent home earlier this week. All time slots are filled on a first come basis. I will send a confirmation of conference times home with each student once all of the forms are returned.

* This year the 4th grade teachers decided to do more of the Ancestor Report writing in school instead of at home. For those of you with older children, this is a change. Students will still need to find out some of the information at home to make this project successful. This project will be done in Language Arts/Writing class. Those students in my LA/Writing class completed the following:

· Family Tree

· All of Section 2 of the report which consisted of writing about 5 holidays and traditions.

Students were assigned to find information about what countries their ancestors came from and when they came to America (if it is known). They also were to ask if they were named after anyone. On Monday and Tuesday, Mrs. Konyak will come to our class and help us look up our name meanings, print maps, and print titles.

Veteran’s Day: This is a big deal in our building. It is a wonderful celebration. In preparation, the 4th graders are making hands, cards, and posters for display. In addition, there is an optional essay they are invited to write. Please see the information below. If you child chooses to do this, the essay will also be submitted to the Topton Legion as part of their essay contest.

Hello Fourth Grade Families,

I am writing to inform you of an optional essay contest that you might want your child to participate in.

Every year there is a theme sent to us by the American Legion for Veterans Day. There is an essay contest based upon that theme. Three winners are chosen for each grade level. The first place winners will be able to read their essays at the assembly on Veterans Day. The others will be recognized. The essays will then be sent to the American Legion to be entered into another contest across the state.

The theme this year is:

How does learning about government and America help me

to become a guardian of the liberties of our country?

If you would like your child to be a part of this contest, all essays must be turned in to me by Tuesday, November 1st. The essay should be between 100 and 200 words. It's OK if it goes a little over. They may be handwritten or typed. The theme should be the title, and the student's name should be written at the end. You are more than welcome to discuss the theme with your child before they write, as this is not an easy topic for a fourth grade student to grasp.

I look forward to reading the essays that are submitted.
