Dear Parents,
One of the highlights of the Middle School year is our annual China Trips. These are trips that are organized and designed to provide opportunities for students to apply concepts and skills beyond the classroom. This coming May 5-9 students will have the opportunity to travel to various parts of China and explore topics that relate to Chinese culture and history, as well as SCIS’ Expected School wide Learning Results (ESLR’s) with various curricular ties incorporated into this year’s trip. These trips are mandatory for MS students as they are very much a part of our school curriculum
As a first step, please ensure that all student passport and visa information has been updated and forwarded to the school secretaries. This needs to be completed before the end of February.
See below the individual grade locations. Information about costs and payment will be coming out shortly. SCIS has funded half the total cost of all trips.
Grade 6- Yaolin (New trip this year!)
Grade 7- Yangshuo
Grade 8- Hainan
We truly hope that you and your child are as excited about these trips as we are… More details regarding flight schedules, hotel accommodations, teacher chaperones, student rooming arrangements and more will be coming over the next few months. If you have any questions feel free to contact us at the e-mail addresses provided below. Please also have your child return the Medical Release from to their advisory teacher before the end of February as well.

We further agree to release and hold harmless the International Schools Foundation and Shanghai Community International Schools, their agents, officers, employees, and volunteers, from any and all liability, claims, suits, demands, judgments, costs, interest and expense (including attorneys’ fees and costs) arising from such activities, including any accident or injury to the student and the costs of medical services.
Code of Conduct and Statement of Disciplinary Action
The Code of Conduct and Statement of Disciplinary Action are agreed to by signing the attached Permission Slip.
1. Code of Conduct- All school rules outlined in the SCIS Upper School Agenda and Parent – Student Handbook will be enforced on school trips.
All members of the school community will be respectful to each other in an environment that is safe. Disrespectful behaviour includes the use of profane language, stealing, fighting, threatening, or other types of rude behaviour. In some circumstances inappropriate behaviour off school grounds can affect the functioning of school and will not be tolerated. Making inappropriate comments in a language other than English is also and equally prohibited.
The following activities are considered flagrant acts of disobedience and will be treated by a combination of penalties that may include suspension and/or expulsion from school.
· Truancy (including schedules and curfew)
· Possession of alcohol, drugs, drug paraphernalia, tobacco, tobacco paraphernalia (lighters, etc.) and weapons of any sort (including realistic toys)
· Vandalism
· Fighting
· Failure to follow bus safety rules or obey a bus monitor
2. Statement of Disciplinary Action- The following are examples of disciplinary action which may be taken in the event that the Code of Conduct or school policies are not followed:
· Sent home immediately at the student’s expense
· Placed in the care of a chaperone
· Confined to a specific area
· Referred to school administration
· Expulsion, suspension or discipline which could result in a denial to participate in future trips
