LESSON PLAN
UNIT:Grade 7, Unit 2 – Geometry in 3 Dimensions
TITLE: Nets of a cube
OBJECTIVES:The student will:
Learn the terminology associated with nets and polyhedrons.
Construct a number of different nets of a cube.
Think logically.
Work cooperatively in a small group.
PREPARATION:Photocopy the accompanying activity sheet. Collect the materials. Cut out the net of the cube shown in Step 1 of the accompanying Investigation.
MATERIALS:Per group:
At least 5 sheets of grid paper (1” paper or 2 cm paper is preferred) in total for drawing and cutting out the nets.
1 sheet of grid paper per student for recording the nets.
1 Nets of a Cube sheet per person
1 pair of scissors per person, if possible.
One sheet of grid chart paper (or a grid on an OHT) to record solutions
GROUP SIZE:3 to 4 students
DO NOW:Math Now! review sheet
MINI-LESSON:Do Step 1 with the students. Ensure that they know what a net is, and what a cube is. Have the students record this net on grid paper. Check that they have done this correctly. If there are not enough scissors to go around, then have the groups divide the labor, e.g. one to draw the nets, one to cut the nets, one to fold the nets to see which make a cube.
GROUP WORK:The groups carry out the investigation.
SHARE:Each group is first asked to share one net that they have found, by drawing it on the chart paper on the chalk board. Other groups can question the group if they disagree. Groups are then asked to share any other nets they have found (there are 11 different nets in all).
JOURNAL WRITING:Ask the students to:
draw the net of a square-based pyramid
explain why they think their drawing is correct.
