Extreme EMS Spring 2010
Con Ed Symposium Course Descriptions
Ballistics & EMS – Guns are an ever growing concern in the EMS field everyday and penetrating trauma is one of the biggest killers we face in our society. This session will review ballistics and types of weapons that are being found more and more on the street, as well as cover care for these devastating injuries. (1.5 Other)
Bioterrorism: A Primer for EMS – A look at how biological terrorism has the potential to affect EMS providers and how quickly this type of terroristic tactic can create an epidemic and become a disaster. (1.0 hrs M’T, 1.0 hrs Other)
Crush Injury – As we review disaster emergencies, we’ll look in depth at the devastating injuries that can come from being buried in disaster rubble piles and some of the associated medical complications that can result in life or death. (1.0 hr M/T)
Dealing With K-9 Related Emergencies in Disaster – We are fortunate to have a vet tech that regularly trains, cares for and educates the public on the agile K-9. In this case, we’ll look at K-9 related trauma, emergencies, assessment and treatment of the working dog in both the disaster and tactical environment and special issues they may be subject to. Anticipate a “live” prop of the K-9 variety or 2. (0.5 hrs Other)
EMS Response to Larger Incidents – Dr. Neal’s very poignant and informative presentation on his mission to Haiti with PA DMAT-1. This lecture is sure to leave you in awe of the need for a global medical response in this type of disaster and respecting the men and women who step up to the challenge. (2.5 hrs Other)
EMS Coping Strategies With Children in Disaster – Children – a precious commodity, but often a silent victim in large scale disasters and tragedies. A representative from Centre County Children & Youth Services will discuss coping strategies for dealing with these victims. (1.0 hrs Other)
Human Response to Blast Injury – A look at the intense trauma associated with blast injury and how it affects the human body. Graphic photos accompany this lecture. (0.5 hrs Other)
Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings – A specialized 4-hour certification class through the DOJ that will have you looking at EMS scenes much differently in relation to terrorism. We are fortunate to have 2 certified instructors from New Mexico Tech to present this unique and not soon forgettable program that may save the life of you and your EMS crew. (4.0 hrs Other)
Intro to Tactical EMS (TEMS) – So, what exactly is Tactical EMS and how does it differ from the everyday street EMS field we all serve in? Kent Knable, a local Tactical Paramedic, will review the complexities and uniqueness of this highly specialized field. (1.0 hrs Other)
Issues in EMS Disaster Response– How does EMS fit in to Disaster Response? Just ask anyone who has deployed as a responder with the PA Regional EMS Strike Teams. Mike Fedorchak, a local EMT-P who has deployed for 2 of the 3 Seven Mountains Regional Strike Team missions will discuss the EMS role, strike team response and his experiences with a flood response to the Wilkes Barre area and for Hurricane Gustav in 2008. (1.5 Other)
Less Lethal Weapons/Chemical Munitions – As part of the tactical field and in police work, it is obvious lethal force is not advocated unless absolutely necessary. Chief John F Chester from the Mifflin County Regional Police Department will have an in depth overview of the most recent in non lethal, less lethal and chemical style weapons being used in the field. (2.0 hrs Other)
Mass Shootings – Unfortunately they seem to be everywhere and no community no matter how large or how small is immune from them. We’ll take a close look at school, college, and workplace related shootings and the difficulties associated with these high profile EMS incident responses. (0.5 M/T, 1.5 Other)
Pandemics – No, this is not just another class on Swine Flu---this is an in depth look at pandemics and how they can affect EMS staffing, response, and treatment of the sick and injured when they are on the frontlines and affected as well. (0.5 M/T, 0.5 Other)
Psychological First Aid – Presented as a Red Cross certification class, Psychological First Aid presents some of the best front line recognition, intervention and treatment to medical and rescue responders during times of high stress incidents and disasters. This is presented as a peer intervention from the aspect of “taking care of one another” and is the front line application for stress responses prior to the incident being over or CISM stepping in. You may just save the life of a co-worker or co-responder. (0.5 hrs M/T, 3.5 hrs Other)
Role of EMS/Medics in Tactical Medical Operations – So you’re not tactically trained, but you’re called as the initial response unit to a police standoff, barricaded gunman or active shooter---What is your role? What do you do? Police Officer and Paramedic John Miles will review the role of civilian EMS in tactical incidents, response zones and how best to support the tactical operation. (1.0 hrs Other)
Street Survival/Management of Aggressive Behavior – This will be unlike any course you’ve ever attended before and a taste of what MG Tactical programs can offer an EMS service. Ron Millward, supervisor for Centre County Probation & Parole and a master instructor for the Municipal Police Officers Emergency Training Center (MPOETC) will show you many things you can learn from the behavior of persons at your EMS scene and while in your care, as well as in tactical situations. (2.0 hrs Other)
Tasers: EMS Implications – An excellent lecture covering not only how the use of tasers can affect our EMS patients, but a close look at unique medical phenomenon known as “Excited Delirium” and what implications that can have for your patient and his/her outcome in EMS and Police incidents. (0.5 M/T, 0.5 Other)
Use of K-9’s in Response to Disasters – Look around and they are often the stars of disaster search and rescue operations --- the K-9. We’ll take a close look at their roles, tactics and specialized training from an actual K-9 handler with PA-Task Force 1. (1.0 hrs Other)
Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Awareness – This is the Office of Domestic Preparedness certification course in awareness for WMD’s. Again, we are privileged to have 2 certified instructors from New Mexico Tech to present this eye opening course to the post 9/11 EMS responder – An excellent class for EMS, police, fire or SAR personnel. (1.5 M/T, 2.5 Other)
