FULLTIME COUNSELOR - DISABLED STUDENTS PROGRAM AND SERVICES (12-month)

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Specialized counseling position assigned to assist students who have learning, developmental, physical, visual, hearing, psychological and other disabilities. Duties include: academic, personal, vocational and some group counseling using student medical/academic records and computerized information systems; conducting student orientations; developing educational plans with students; career planning for undecided students; counseling students on probation/dismissal status; facilitating outreach/recruitment and program planning activities. Serve as a matriculation/retention agent and work collaboratively with four disability specialists to develop recommendations for academic/vocational goals and accommodations with students with disabilities. Identify and recommend reasonable accommodations to students with psychological and developmental disabilities. Conduct community liaison activities with the Department of Rehabilitation, business and industry, and other agencies. Participate in full-time faculty responsibilities including committee and meeting assignments, curriculum development and student activities. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling; OR Master’s degree in special education with twenty-four (24) or more semester units in upper division or graduate level coursework in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, or social work; OR Master’s degree in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, career development, or social welfare AND either twelve (12) or more semester units in upper division or graduate level coursework specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities, or two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent in one or more of the following: (a)counseling or guidance for students with disabilities; or (b) counseling and /or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations in which the responsibilities of the position were predominately or exclusively for persons with disabilities; OR Hold a valid California Community College DSP&S counselor credential. AND Sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of college students, and of individuals with disabilities.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Two years of full-time experience, within the past four years, providing counseling and/or guidance to persons with disabilities, preferably in a California community college. Knowledge in the administration and interpretation of a broad range of aptitude, ability, career, and educational diagnostic tests used with the disabled population. Ability to effectively communicate using American Sign Language. Working knowledge of disability and ability to provide goal directed academic/vocational/career/rehabilitation counseling. Ability to effectively utilize computerized word-processing, information systems, and internet. Ability to work collaboratively with others. Provide leadership in areas of student intervention strategies and work with academically challenged students.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Contract shall be for full-time, tenure-track, 12 month assignment for the 2004 fall semester, beginning August 26, 2004.Position may include evening and/or weekend duties. SALARY Starting salary ranges from $64,307 - $88,332 depending on education and experience. Excellent fringe benefits included.
