Course Description:
This is a Conversational Samoan Language Course at the elementary level. The focus is on enunciation, vocabulary building and the correct use of words in directed fundamental dialoguing, which should transit to more student oriented conversation. Upon completion students should become comfortably fluent that they should want to continue with further training in SAM 111 at ASCC or learning on their own. This course is intended for non-Samoan speakers and those who took SAM 101A.
Course Rationale:
The course is set up to meet a growing need for non-speakers who wish to speak the local language and participate in traditional activities. It is also for Samoan students raised mainly in English speaking homes both locally and off-island. This is also to equip students for higher classes both in ASCC and off island universities.

Methods of Instructions:
· Language of instruction Samoan and English
· Lectures –utilizing powerpoint presentations to cover main sections and concepts of the course. Students are expected to take notes or fill in any outlines given.
· Group assignments (Oral and Written) –graded using Group rubrics, Participation rubric
· Individual Assignments –essays, presentations, blogging on given issues and topics
· Multimedia –online research, blogging, class website quiz, students using powerpoint and other technology to present information/ assignments. This is to utilize technology and media to promote and maintain Samoan language and culture.
Course Expectations:
1. ATTEND ALL CLASS MEETINGS AND TAKE NOTES DURING LECTURES (INCLUDING PROMPT ARRIVAL)
2. Set aside a specific time during the day for this course--the best time that fits your schedule. Use that time for preparation (reading, studying etc.) and for participation (reading, assignments, taking quizzes).
3. Don't put off the work--you need to keep up so you can more effectively participate in group and class discussions.
4. Don't be afraid to ask questions, there are probably several others who are wondering the same thing.
5. Contribute consistently, participate to class discussions and blogging several times a week, either--this will keep you engaged, on-track, and moving steadily toward your goal!

Attendance & Late Assignment Policy:
All students attending ASCC are expected to attend all of their scheduled classes. Students with excessive absences during the first two weeks of instruction will be administratively dropped. A student cannot exceed six (6) absences for Monday, Wednesday, Friday classes, four (4) absences for Tuesday, Thursday classes; and three (3) absences for summer sessions. Students with excessive absences, in accordance to this policy, will receive a lower or failing grade for the semester or session. A student can be excused from classes at the discretion or upon verification by the instructor, for the following reasons: medical reasons, family emergency, special curricular activities, military obligations, jury duty, and related official College sponsored activities. It is the responsibility of the student to make arrangements with his/her instructor(s) for work to be made up for absences due to legitimate reasons. Students are required to submit in writing, justifications or provide appropriate documentation for absences to the Dean of Academic Affairs and when appropriate the Dean of Institution of Trades & Technology (ITT) for approval. Veteran students are to refer to the Student Services Veterans Educational Assistance sections for additional attendance requirements. (In case the instructor is absent, students will be informed and a signup sheet will be given!)
