Public Affairs Assistant - 4-month Contract- Ottawa Office

The Canadian Urban Transit Association is a member-based association that acts as the collective voice of public transit and urban mobility in Canada. Members include transit systems, private sector businesses, government agencies and affiliates who benefit from our training, research, data, advocacy, events, technical services and more.

We currently have an exciting 4-month temporary contract (mid-June – mid October) for a Public Affairs Assistant to join our Ottawa team.

Public Affairs Assistant – Position Summary

Working closely with the Coordinator, Public Policy; the Public Affairs Assistant will assist the Public Policy Coordinator in planning, organizing and running the Canadian Urban Transit Association’s 2017 Transit Awareness Days and assist the Public Affairs department in the areas of policy, government relations and communications, as needed.

Key Job Responsibilities

Organize and facilitate key events

§ Support CUTA team in planning, promoting and running CUTA’s Transit Policy Forum and Transit Awareness Days —including booking speakers, working with contractors and assisting during event.

Produce and disseminate Public Affairs communication materials

§ Produce communication materials (emails, blogs, itineraries, press releases) to plan or promote Public Affairs events;

§ Ensure the Public Affairs and Transit Awareness Days section of the website is accurate and up to date;

§ Assist Public Policy Coordinator in organizing an advertising campaign

§ Communicate with grassroots advocates and members regarding CUTA’s advocacy initiatives;

§ Prepare written materials for the CUTA blog and Forum magazine.

Government relations support & CUTA Committees

§ Professionally and accurately represent CUTA to elected officials and key stakeholders;

§ Write policy papers, briefings and speaker notes for the Public Policy Coordinator and CEO as required;

§ Respond to political inquiries around public affairs and policy issues, stemming from CUTA members, CUTA departments, and the public;

Assist CUTA Public Affairs team

§ Conduct media monitoring and report to communications team

§ Review and analyze policy material relating to urban mobility in Canada

§ Work with other CUTA departments to ensure the Public Affairs department is effectively promoting and representing CUTA’s vision and objectives

Qualifications

§ As the successful candidate, you have excellent writing skills, preferably in both official languages (English & French);

§ A University Degree (BA) in Political Science, Communications, Urban Affairs, or a related field;

§ Event planning, Advocacy, Public Relations, Political Staff, or Election Campaign Staff;

§ Excellent administration and project management skills.
