Beyond the Book Report:

Outside Reading Book Report #5

By now, you should almost be done reading your book for the next report. As usual, you will need to complete an action curve (attached). However, this book report will be different from the previous assignments. Your goal is to show what you know about the book you read, but show it in a way that appeals to your interests. Choose from one of the options on the next page. I know some of them need a little clarification, so please ask me questions! I am happy to help you understand and work on these projects. This is your last book report of the year (stop cheering!), so put time and effort into this assignment. It makes up a significant percentage of your grade. Just like last time, you will be presenting your finished work to the class. Therefore, you will be assessed on your oral presentation skills in addition to your ability to be a respectful audience member.

The book report is due on Friday, June 10!

Be prepared to present your report to the class. Half of the class will present on that Friday and the other half will present on the following Tuesday. I will select who presents first at random! Therefore, be ready to go on Friday in case you are chosen.

Assignment Options

  • Make a CD/Soundtrack for the movie with a typed 2-3 sentence explanation for each song choice. The songs/lyrics should connect to the events, setting, themes, or characters’ emotions throughout the book. You should also create a CD cover with artwork related to the novel and a list of the songs. You need to select a minimum of 10 songs for your CD.
  • Be a Talk Show host interviewing the author. You should prepare at least 10 questions about your book and the author’s life. Research the author so you can make educated guesses about how he or she would answer your questions. The questions and answers should be detailed (no yes or no answers).
  • Tell the story through a different character. Dress up like the character and retell the novel. Think about how the story would be different if told from this new point of view. You will need a typed version of your retelling in addition to your performance.
  • Be a Costume Designer for the movie version. You can create outfits with real clothing, doll clothing, use magazine cutouts, or draw your own sketches. You will want to create an outfit design for the major characters and may need to create multiple outfits to suit the main events from the book. Type a brief explanation of each design and how you imagined these outfits based on the info from the novel.
  • Create a Graphic Novel version of the book. It should retell the entire story and should look finished. This means you need a cover, several pages, illustrations with captions, and should be extremely neat! Check out real graphic novels for examples.
  • Connect your novel to a real social/societal problem based on the issues in the story. Do a little research on the social problem and explain how it links to the conflict/issues in the novel.
  • Create a photo album/scrapbookof the main events from the novel. Imagine you are one of the characters and are creating this scrapbook to remember what happened in the book. You can use actual photographs to reenact the major scenes, or you can illustrate the main events. There should be words/captions in addition to the pictures. Get creative with this project by using scrapbooking materials (such as special paper, stickers, etc…)
