Tuesday / Make personal connections to myths and understand the elements of plot within a myth. We will also recognize theme.
Oral Reading of “Daedalus and Icarus”. Pay attention to the accuracy of your words, your rate (not too fast or too slow) and inflection – with expression in your voice. / Identify plot and theme on page 57 and 58 of SpringBoard

Wednesday / Use root words as a vocabulary strategy. We will also engage in close reading about choices and consequences.
Close reading of “Phaethon”
Chunk 1 – Decide who is speaking within each set of quotation marks, the yellow-haired boy or the one with black hair. How do you know? Write on your text who is speaking
Chunk 2 – Why do you think Phaethon lies about his relationship with his father? What choice does Phaethon have at this point? What might be the consequences of each choice you stated?
Chunk 3 – How does Apollo feel about his son, Phaethon? How does Apollo save Phaethon? What could have happened if Apollo had not intervened?
Chunk 4 – Make a prediction about what Phaethon will ask Apollo.
Chunk 5 – What promise does Apollo make to Phaethon? Is it wise to make this promise? Why or Why not?
Chunk 6 – Why does Apollo want Phaethon to change his request? Predict what might happen if Phaethon drives the horses.
Chunk 7 – What will happen if Phaethon chooses not to obey Apollo’s instructions? Predict whether or not Phaethon will follow the directions. Give a reason for your prediction. Mark the text that reveals Phaethon’s character.
Chunk 8 - Why do you think Phaethon chooses to do exactly what Apollo warned him not to do? What are the consequences of Phaethon’s choice? Mark the places in the text where Phaethon’s character is revealed. / Apply words in a new context page 59 and provide text evidence for characterization – 61-70 (not for homework)
