The RMIT Engineering staff develop and deliver in Australia and overseas, innovative engineering education, training, research, development and consulting to address real world issues.

1.  THE ROLE

1.1.  Ensure that the laboratory and workshop facilities are of a high standard and support the teaching, research and commercial activities of the School of Civil and Chemical Engineering.

1.2.  Provide day-to-day supervision of the technical staff: prioritise and schedule the work carried out in the workshop and laboratories; ensure that the quality of work carried out is of a high standard; develop annual work plans with technical staff; and plan and implement technical staff training and professional development.

1.3.  Operate, maintain, plan and acquire the chemical engineering equipment, and maintain and upgrade facilities.

1.4.  Manage the resources budget for the Chemical Engineering Discipline.

1.5.  Participate in strategic planning and administrative preparation for capital expenditure and facilities/building infrastructure.

1.6.  Occupational Health & Safety
The Laboratory Manager is required to ensure that all employees and students comply with Occupational Health & Safety Legislation. Specific requirements:

·  Ensure the implementation of OH&S legislation and regulations;

·  Adopt work practices that support the OH & S policy;

·  Take reasonable care for his/her own health and safety and that of others in the workplace that may be affected by their actions;

·  Participate in meetings, fire drills, training and other OH & S activities;

·  Use equipment in compliance with relevant guidelines;

·  Ensure that all incidents, hazardous conditions or injuries are reported immediately to the supervisor or relevant authority.

1.7.  Deal with enquiries from potential external clients, particularly on technical aspects, provide technical advice and expertise on commercial projects, and participate in a range of activities across the School including commercial projects.

2.  DECISION MAKING

The position is responsible for decision-making relating to laboratory management, including compliance with all current Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. However, in all other areas the Laboratory Manager is a support position only, providing high-level advice to the Head of School on matters relating to planning and acquisition, maintenance and upgrading of equipment and staffing requirements.

3.  DELIVERABLES

3.1.  Provide expert technical advice to students and staff.

3.2.  Provide advice on technological requirements to ensure that the School is at the forefront of engineering technology.

3.3.  Ensure that Occupational Health & Safety requirements are communicated effectively to staff and students and compliance with these requirements.

3.4.  Acquire, install and commission the School’s physical resources within budget and specified timeframes.

3.5.  Co-ordinate rolling plans for capital expenditure within budget and specified timeframes.

5.  RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the Resources Manager of the School of Civil and Chemical Engineering and supervises the day-to-day activities of the Technical Staff of the Chemical Engineering Discipline, as well as coordinating the facilities and OH&S of the research staff. The Laboratory Manager will be required to liaise on a day-to-day basis with the Discipline Director of Chemical Engineering. Clients of this position are staff, students and industry contacts.

6.  KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Qualifications
A formal professional or technical qualification in a relevant science or engineering field or related discipline
Preferred
Tertiary qualification in an engineering field. A good knowledge of the tertiary education environment.
Skills/ Experience

6.1.  Demonstrated leadership experience and success in managing and coordinating, technical staff, laboratory facilities and laboratory projects in a multidisciplinary environment, including an ability to think strategically and operate in a demanding business environment.

6.2.  Demonstrated knowledge of the requirements of engineering education laboratories including familiarity with ISO9000 series, or equivalent quality standards.

6.3.  Demonstrated knowledge of current OH&S legislation and regulations, and experience in their implementation.

6.4.  Demonstrated experience in solving problems related to methods of fabrication and design of innovative items of equipment, including a demonstrated technical ability to develop such equipment for laboratory purposes.

6.5.  Demonstrated effective oral and written communication and teamwork skills.

6.6.  Sound information technology skills including word, excel, email and internet.

ATTACHMENT A

Background information for applicants

The Faculty of Engineering combines Higher Education and the Technical and Further Education (TAFE) sectors to provide industry and the community with comprehensive research, teaching and learning and consultancy services across a broad range of engineering disciplines.

The Faculty comprises more than 520 academic and support staff catering to some 9000 students enrolled in trade, paraprofessional, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The operations of the Faculty are primarily conducted at the City Campus together with Bundoora East and Fishermens Bend.

The academic areas of the Faculty of Engineering are built on combinations of like disciplines in departments, schools or Training Centres. Each area is managed by a Head. Senior academic staff are responsible for leading the teaching and learning programs and the research and consulting activities.

The Faculty offers a comprehensive range of Engineering undergraduate degree programs as well as trade and paraprofessional programs. In addition, several five-year undergraduate double degree programs are offered, combining engineering with business or computer science.

Graduate Certificates, Graduate Diplomas and Masters degrees by coursework are also offered. Coursework activities are complemented by both Masters and PhD research programs.

A special feature of RMIT Engineering is the absence of a common first year for all undergraduate engineering students. Each course sets it own quota and entry level, thereby enabling its students to commence activities in technology specific areas in the first year of their academic career. All courses have a clear vocational bias, a factor which industry has clearly recognised and strongly supported. Special emphasis is also placed on developing the personal qualities of the students beyond the technological content found in more traditional engineering courses. Employment prospects for RMIT engineering graduates are excellent. All Bachelor of Engineering degrees are recognised by the Institution of Engineers, Australia.

In addition to the teaching departments the Faculty of Engineering has established a number of research centres. The centres provide focus for the Faculty’s commitment to strategically directed and applied research activities and thereby assist with industry interactions.
