LORD OF THE FLIES SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
PART A: ANALYTICAL ESSAY

In William Golding’s novel The Lord of the Flies, objects, places and people are frequently more important than they appear. Write a five paragraph essay which shows the significance of ONE of the following:
∙ the conch ∙ the dead parachutist
∙ the sow’s head ∙ the littluns
∙ the jungle
Your essay should include an introductory paragraph (including a thesis and plan for development), three paragraphs which prove your thesis, and a concluding paragraph which summarizes your argument and key points.
Submit your brainstorming, outline, and first draft along with your final draft.
PART B: NARRATIVE WRITING

We have explored several features of narrative writing both as readers and writers. To demonstrate your skill in narrative writing, write 250-350 words on one of the following topics. Make sure you brainstorm and use the features of narrative writing including diction, sentence variety, atmosphere, narrative voice and fluency (or ‘flow’).
A) Describe a major event from the second half of novel using the first person voice of one character. (Some possible events include: searching for the beast, Jack’s feast or the ‘dance’ afterward, the confrontation of the two ‘tribes’, or the hunt for Ralph).
OR
B) Write the beginning of a story where you find yourself (or another modern teenager finds him/herself) stranded in a wilderness setting. Use the first person narrative voice.
Submit your brainstorming, planning and any drafts along with your final draft. Remember that your brainstorming should show an understanding of literary terms like diction, atmosphere, etc.
