In this scenario, the client needs some changes implemented in the network design to control the access from student computers to internet, to increase the bandwidth of wireless network, and to prioritize the traffic flow from staff member computers. With those requirements and $2000 budget given, I have to select some network software and software tools to increase the network capacity.

For hardware, I have chosen Billion BiPAC GS2024-4S switch ($400 approx.) and Billion BiPAC 7800N ($150 approx.) router to cover the problems. With BiPAC GS2024-4S, we can connect any devices with up to 24 computers or network-based hardware such as Network Attached Storage (NAS) for applications such as file, video, photo and data sharing. The smart management functionalities built into this switch enhance service and connection speed assisting MIS administrators. VLAN reduces the size of collision domains and increases network performance by limiting broadcast traffic.

Moreover, it supports up to 16 groups of VLAN table. Port Aggregation enlarges the bandwidth of the backbone connection. Tag- and port-based QoS is supported to guarantee high demand bandwidth applications such as VoIP and videoconference. The supported 802.3x standard and backpressure flow control mechanisms ensure the correction of data transmitting. The built-in web-based management interface enables the MIS to easily manage networks. The BiPAC GS2024-4S is based on non-blocking architecture that supports every switch port at full-duplex capability, enabling all its 24 ports to boost bandwidth up to a total 48 Gbps backbone link to switched workgroup or a server fat-pipe links. This eliminates users concern about bandwidth congestion. Its store-and-forward switching mode at full wire-speed for maximum performance ensures low-latency and error-free transmission, thus efficiently saving user time and enhancing the joy of multimedia applications at maximum network performance.

In addition, I have chosen Billion BiPAC 7800N for wireless extension. We will experience super-fast broadband connectivity with the ADSL2+ and FTTx multi-service gateway. The BiPAC 7800(N) series is an all-in-one ADSL2+ / Broadband Router that offers users the flexibility of multiple Internet connections and expanded wireless coverage.

All this is offered while maintaining high-speed broadband access via ADSL2+ or through an Ethernet WAN. The integrated 802.11n Wireless Access Point ensures the 7800N offers faster wireless speeds. The BiPAC 7800(N) automatically adopts the optimal connection to deliver smooth, constant signal reception even if obstacles are present. The BiPAC 7800(N) series is equipped with a second Ethernet WAN interface, which can be used to connect to an external broadband modem. This unique feature frees users to add FTTx services when they become available. Users can easily enjoy high bandwidth applications such as High Definition IPTV services without changing their home network. A robust Firewall is also built in to provide protection against hacker attacks while the Quality of Service feature prioritizes queues and traffic for applications such as music downloads, online gaming, video streaming and file sharing.

For software, I have chosen Bandwidth controller enterprise edition which is suitable for service providers and corporate networks. Prices are varies and depend on the number of users, obviously if number of users increase, the price is increased. For examples, $199 for 50 users, $249 for 100 users, and $849 for 1000 users.

Bandwidth Controller Enterprise is a scalable traffic shaping solution for corporate networks and service providers capable of managing bandwidth for entire college. It includes guaranteed reservation, percentage allocation and connection load balancing. Moreover, it comes with unlimited upgrades and support and up to 2,000 concurrent users. We just install this software on the server of the network so administrators are able to access both downloading and uploading activities over the network.

Details above have shown that they would help solving the problems because they are suitable and valuable for the client because they meet the requirements and the budget is not over. Most important thing is the capacity of computers and network for the college will be much better than using the current modem.
