Re: Tutors in the Classroom Program

Welcome!

As you may be aware, your Family of Schools Superintendent recommended your school to be selected for the Ministry and TDSB partnered program, Tutors in the Classroom. Since its introduction in 1997, this student support opportunity has benefited both schools and students. The program is intended to provide assistance to classroom teachers through tutoring activities and direct contact with students, assisting teachers with reinforcing skills and concepts.

How may a tutor assist in your school?

  • Working with students in need of remediation or enrichment
  • Individual tutoring or guided practice in small groups
  • Familiarizing students with educational software

NOTE: Your tutor may work with students on a one-to-one basis or with small groups, always in the presence of the supervising teacher(s). The tutor is not to be left alone with students.

How Do I Get Started?

  • The sooner you complete the enclosed form and return to me as indicated, the sooner your school will be confirmed as approved (your tutor may begin upon submission to you of the completed Police Reference Check*, Application Form and Statement of Understanding)

Please read carefullyand follow the steps outlined on the next page

*IMPORTANT! Provincial law dictates that a Police Reference Check must be evidenced to the principal before the tutor assignment may begin. Information re this mandatory clearance is included in this package.

Principal’s Checklist for Tutor Selection and Assignment

1. School Liaison:

Due to the high level of reporting accountability to the Ministry, the Principal of each participating school must be the contact person, the single liaison between the school and the Project Manager. Inquiries can be directed to John McPhee, 6-7987.

Each school is encouraged to find its own tutor and complete the necessary “hiring” submissions.

*** If you are not able to find a tutor then one may be found for your school from external applicants. The Project Manager (4-7309) may provide a list of candidates – it will be the responsibility of the Principal to make contact and the final selection.

  1. Criteria for tutor eligibility:

Tutors must be individuals currently registered as full time students in a university or college. No graduate students or unemployed certified teachers will be eligible; no person currently employed by the TDSB in any position, may be considered.

  • Provide the prospective tutor with the Application, and Statement of Understanding
  • Once signed, make 2 copies- keep the original in the school, give one copy to the applicant and forward the other to the Project Manager
  • Provide him/her with the Police Reference Check information

3. Check the applicant’s references. (Retain names and telephone numbers)

4. Assignment Preparation:

Each school will provide orientation to the school, staff, students and program directions, during the first week of the tutor’s presence in the school. Please ensure that the tutor becomes familiar with facilities, as well as the routine of the school; identify washrooms, lunchroom and staffroom. Meet with your tutor candidate to discuss the work assignments and work schedule prior to starting the placement.

5. Photocopy the Tracking Formprovided, one for each month of the assignment period. The original is completed and sent to the Project Manager at the end of each month. A copy is

retained at the school as they may be requested to substantiate tutor hours for payment. Tutors are paid $10.00 hourly for a maximum of 100 hours per school, for the year.
