The wait is overfor the Pebble Hills Spartans football team.
The newest program in El Paso begins practice Monday with eyes set on the challenge of playing varsity football for the first time after wrapping up its final season of subvarsity action in Maywith its spring game.
"There is a great deal of excitement around here with the start of the season not far away," head coach Mark Torres said. "We had a good spring and the kids made progress. Thekids worked hard in the summer. We'll have to continue to make progress as fall camp starts. We have a really good coaching staff and that's been a huge plus for us."
The Spartans aren't taking it easy as far as their nondistrict schedule goes. They open up with Irvin, then takeon Chapin and Andressbefore starting District 1-6A play.
"We're ready to get going on the varsity level," wide receiver Justin Wolfe said. "Our expectation is that we will compete at a high level and we want to make the playoffs. We've been working hard. We have some good people on both sides of the ball. We just want to continue to get better every week. I'm fortunate to have this chance to play on varsity and I'm going to give it my best shot to help the team do well."
Wolfe will help lead the way on offense, along with running backs Kevin Averette and Cameron Seabrook.
"Kevin and Cameron have the potential to do some great things this year. They are both really talented," Wolfe said.
On defense, defensive end Rafael Castor, defensive lineman Johnny Santiago and linebacker Kevin Esquivel will help lead the way.
Added Seabrook: "The defense made us better on offense. Every day we went up against them in the spring and last year, we came back the next day and improved. We're focused on getting better every day in practice, and when the games start, we'll take it one game at a time. But we're eager for the season to start."
