UBC Department of Psychiatry

Academic Deliverables

Within the Department of Psychiatry, academic deliverables expected for professorial ranks are within the areas of Teaching, Scholarly and Professional Activities, and Servicein providing ongoing significant academic contributions to their respective academic unit(s), the Faculty and the University to a level consistent with their rank, whether full-time or part-timewith the exception of clinical faculty members whose deliverables are set out in the FOM Policy on Clinical Faculty Appointments.

Significant scholarly and professional activity, extensive involvement with teaching and academic service, and where applicable, excellence in clinical health care delivery are required. The Department also recognizes that at different stages in a faculty member’s career there may be different degrees of emphasis on the balance between the expectations for their specific rank, which should always be documented in consultation with the Head of Academic Unit. For example, new assistant professors are often initially provided with lower teaching and/or academic service workloads and performance expectations while senior faculty may have increased administrative or leadership responsibilities. Please refer to the Formal Educational Activities for Faculty Members in the Department of Psychiatry for the range Teaching/Educational Activitiesidentified in the Department. Please refer to the range of Scholarly and Professional Activities and deliverablesnoted below that should be considered.

Each academic unit is required to have a policy regarding the distribution and expectations around academic workload and academic deliverables, which will align with these deliverables and will reflect the norms of the academic unit. Such policies will be referenced in departmental meetings, annual meetings with the Head of Academic Unit as well as considerations for merit, outstanding academic performance and performance salary adjustments (PSA).
