CentralLink/CMich.edu Tutorial – Inserting Anchors
Description: This documentation will walk through the process of creating an anchor, a link that allows a website visitor to jump to a specific area of the page they are currently viewing. This is often used on FAQ’s pages to jump from the question to the answer.
Steps:
- Select the text (it could be the first letter, first word or the entire segment of text) that the user will jump to when they click a link.
Ex:
- Under Editing Tools on the Insert tab in the ribbon at the top of the page, select Link -> From Address.
Ex: - In the dialog box that appears, type a character into the Address field. What you type doesn’t matter, it is only temporary. In this example, the “/” character was inserted. Click OK.
Ex: - The text will be turned into a link, now denoted by the color of the text. Click the link to bring up the Link Tools menu in the ribbon.
Ex: - Select the Link Tools tab. Remove the charater in the URL field that you inserted in step 3. Enter the name of your anchor in the Bookmark field. This is a custom name, so enter whatever you like, but do not use spaces. It’s best to limit the bookmark to a single word as in the the following example:
Ex: - The area that a website visitor will jump to after clicking a link has been set, now the link the visitor must click has to be created. From the body of your site, select the portion of text to be turned into a link.
Ex: - Under Editing Tools on the Insert tab in the ribbon at the top of the page, select Link -> From Address.
Ex: - In the dialog box that appears, insert the pound symbol # followed by the text you entered in the Bookmark field from step 5 (Remember, no spaces are allowed here). Click OK.
Ex:
The link from step 8 will now allow website visitors to go to the text area from step 1 when the link is clicked.
