SERIOUS OFFENDERS REVIEW COUNCIL

The Honourable David Elliott, MP, Minister for Corrections, is seeking expressions of interest from suitable persons for appointment as a part-time community member of the Serious Offenders Review Council for a three year term that may be renewed.

The Serious Offenders Review Council (the Council) is created by the Crimes (Administration of Sentences) Act 1999 and interested persons should refer to the Act. The Council’s principal function is to provide advice and make recommendations to the Commissioner Corrective Services NSW in respect to the management of those inmates deemed serious offenders and to advise the State Parole Authority on the appropriateness of considering these inmates’ release on parole. The Council also performs functions in relation to the management of high security inmates, public interest inmates, escapees and inmates on segregation/protective custody orders.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Knowledge, skills and/or experience in the human services/criminal justice field
  2. Ability to review and analyse large volumes of complex documentation
  3. Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  4. Ability to exercise sound judgement
  5. Preparedness/ability to travel to correctional centres and interview offenders

CONFLICT OF INTEREST DISCLOSURE

INFORMATION ON MEMBERSHIP OF THE SERIOUS OFFENDERS REVIEW COUNCIL

Term of Appointment

The appointment will be for up to three years from the date of appointment and may be renewed.

Remuneration

Community members receive remuneration in the form of a daily allowance of $536 per day. Community members are paid a daily allowance for each meeting and Assessment Committee date.

Travel and subsistence costs directly related to the work of the Council are paid in alignment with Crown Employees Award.

Location of Meetings

The Council meetings are held at Newington House which is located within the grounds of Silverwater Correctional Complex. Assessment Committees of the Council, comprising of members of the Council, also attend NSW correctional centres to interview offenders.

Time Commitment

Meetings and Assessment Committee visits to Correctional Centres are held during business hours. Travel to some regional correctional centres may be required.

Community members can anticipate attending approximately two meetings and/or assessment committee visits per month.

How your application is handled

  • A selection panel, approved by the Minister for Corrections, will consider the applications and determine whether interviews are appropriate.
  • If invited for an interview, you will be asked questions by the selection panel to assess your suitability for the role.
  • The selection panel will then prepare a report for the Minister’s consideration, outlining an assessment of each applicant, and the panel’s recommendations for appointment.
  • The Minister will then make a decision regarding the appointments and forward to the Cabinet for approval.
