Tara and Tiree, Fearless Friends
Actors: Narrator 1 and 2, Jim, Tara, and Tiree
Narrator 1: When Jim was a boy in Canada, his family had dogs. Jim loved those dogs. They were like part of his family.
Narrator 2: When Jim grew up, he still loved dogs. He learned how to train them.
Narrator 1: He helped dogs learn to be good.
Narrator 2: He always said,
Jim: There is no such thing as a bad dog.
Narrator 1: Training dogs became Jim’s job.
Narrator 2: Jim had two dogs named Tara and Tiree.
Tara: Tara was mostly black.
Tiree: Tiree was mostly gold.
Tara: Jim loved them both,
Tiree: and they loved him, too.
Narrator 1: Jim and his dogs liked the winter time. They had good coats to keep warm.
Narrator 2: They played in the snow. They went for long walk.
Jim: They liked going out, but they liked going back in, too. It was good to sit by the fire and listen to the wind.
Narrator 1: Jim’s house was by a lake. Every winter there was ice on it.
Narrator 2: One day Jim went for a walk out on the lake. Tara and Tiree went too.
Tara and Tiree: The dogs loved to run across the ice.
Jim: It was very cold. Jim was ready to go back home.
Narrator 1: Then all at once the ice broke. Jim fell into the cold, cold water.
Narrator 2: Jim called for help.
Narrator 1: No one was near.
Narrator 2: No one could hear him.
Tara: But Tara and Tiree heard Jim
Tiree: and came running.
Jim: Jim wanted the dogs to stay away. He was afraid for them.
Tiree: But Tiree loved Jim. She wanted to help. When she came near the hole, the ice broke again.
Narrator 1: Tiree fell into the water with Jim.
Jim: Jim hoped Tara would run away. He did not want her to fall in the water too.
Tara: But Tara did not run away. She wanted to help.
Narrator 2: She wanted to help.
Tara: First Tara got down low. Then she came closer, little by little.
Narrator 1: The ice did not break.
Jim: Jim put out his hand.
Tara: Tara got very close.
Jim: Then Jim got hold of Tara’s collar. Jim held on.
Tara: Tara pulled back, but Jim was too big.
Narrator 2: He was still in the cold water.
Tiree: Then Tiree did something very smart. She walked on Jim’s back-up and out of the water!
Narrator 1: Tiree was cold, but she was safe!
Narrator 2: Did she run off the ice?
Narrator 1 and 2: No
Jim: She loved Jim too much to run away.
Tiree: Tiree got down on her belly like Tara. She got close to Jim. Jim held out his other hand. And he grabbed on to Tiree’s collar!
Tara and Tiree: The two dogs pulled back hard.
Tara: They slipped, but they didn’t stop.
Tiree: Slowly they pulled Jim up onto the ice.
Tara and Tiree: He was safe.
Narrator 1 and 2: Tara and Tiree had saved his life!
Narrator 1: Soon they were all back in the house. They sat by the fire until they were warm again.
Narrator 2: Jim always said,
Jim: “There is no such thing as a bad dog.”
Narrator 1: Now Jim says something else, too:
Jim: “There is such a thing as a brave and wonderful dog!”
Narrator 2: Jim is sure of this, because he has two of them –
Tara and Tiree: Tara and Tiree.
