- Course Description
This course is designed to introduce students to the art room. It will encourage them to express themselves through a variety of media.
- Course Objectives
- To introduce and familiarize the children with the use of the art room.
- To introduce and familiarize the children with the materials and tools in the art room and their safe and proper handling.
- To stimulate the imagination of each child and extend and deepen the child’s capacities to search out interpretation and meaning in a work of art.
- To assist the child to live harmoniously with other children through group activities.
- To study the elements of art.
- To provide an atmosphere conducive to a creative exploration of these elements through a variety of 2-D and 3-D projects.
- To incorporate an interdisciplinary approach to learning.
- To foster an awareness and understanding of a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

The elements of art are introduced through sequential activities.
- Color Theory
Color is an integral part of our lives and a major element of artistic expression. The students will explore basic color theory and relationships as they are introduced to a variety of media.
- Introduce primary and secondary colors.
- Introduce students to the emotional quality of color.
- Introduce students to media including watercolor, tempera paint, construction paper and crayon.
- Projects may include:
- Painting with a Palette/ Red, Yellow and Orange
- Painting with a Palette/ Red, Blue and Violet
- Painting with a Palette/ Blue, Yellow and Green
- Two-dimensional Art
- Drawing
- Develop disciplined seeing and sensitive motor control through constant practice.
- Contour line-sensitivity to a line as it creates form
- Solid Space-developing volume
- Media introduced may include pencil, crayon, pastel, oil pastel and marker.
- Art appreciation-references to artists and related works of art.
- Projects may include:
- O’Keeffe-Flowers, Houses, Desert, Cityscapes

- Continued experiences in developing disciplined seeing and sensitive motor control.

Texture as surface pattern occurs in nature, our environment and in many types of artwork.
- Media may include collage, rubbings, and sculpture

- Matisse/Shape Collages

- Three-Dimensional Art
- Sculpture-demonstrate various approaches to sculpture problems
- Media may include clay and paper sculpture
- Art appreciation-references to related artists and works of art
- Projects may include:
- Monster Bed clay sculpture
- Mobiles-demonstrate various approaches to solving problems of movable sculptures
- Student Skill Objectives
This segment of the art curriculum fulfills the following NJCCC Standards for Visual and Performing Arts: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Identify the primary colors
- Identify the secondary colors
- Hold a drawing implement correctly
- Create various types of lines in order to draw a picture from their environment
- Create various types of lines in order to paint a picture from their environment
- Create solid forms through use of various media
- Identify basic geometric shapes
- Use painting supplies correctly
- Create a pattern
- Safely and properly handle scissors
- Use various painting materials to create a composition which will include a sense of balance or pattern
- Create a collage demonstrating use of texture
- Create a rubbing
- Create a 3-D form using clay
- Create a 3-D form using paper
- Create a movable sculpture
- Discuss a work of art (both their own and others) from their imagination
- Be familiar with the characteristics of works by a select group of artists
- Evaluation Procedures
This segment of the art curriculum fulfills the following NJCCC Standards for Visual and Performing Arts: 1.4
- Evaluation of success will be based upon abilities and exhibited in studio projects and ability to follow directions.
- Students’ progress will be on an individual basis. Instruction will be varied form whole class presentations to small group and individual demonstrations.
