Problem: Which brand of bubble gum has the most sugar?

Hypothesis: If different brands of bubble gum are compared, then Hubba Bubba would have the most sugar.

Experiment:

1.  Variables

o  Independent variable – brand of bubble gum

Hubba Bubba

Bublicious

Super Bubble

Bazooka

o  Dependent variable – amount of sugar

o  Constants – measurements, time of chewing, flavor

2.  Data Table

Brand Name of Bubble Gum / Mass of gum ( g) / Mass of Chewed Gum (g) / Difference (total-chewed) / Ratio (difference ÷ total) / % Sugar (ratio x100%)
Hubba Bubba
Bublicious
Super Bubble
Bazooka

3.  Materials

o  Triple Beam Balance

o  4 brands of bubble gum flavored bubble gum (Hubba Bubba, Bubble Yum, Super Bubble flavor bubble gum individually wrapped

o  Data Table

o  Timer

o  Calculator

4.  Procedure

A.  Leave the gum in the wrapper and measure the mass of everyone’s gum together.

B.  Be sure and measure it several times (repeated trials.) Then record results in the table below

C.  Chew the gum for 30 minutes and save the wrapper.

D.  Place the chewed gum back in the wrapper and measure the mass of the gum. Don’t forget to do repeated trials. Then record results in the chart above.

E.  Using a calculator complete the rest of the chart.

Data Collection and Analysis:

Brand Name of Bubble Gum / Mass of gum ( g) / Mass of Chewed Gum (g) / Difference (total-chewed) / Ratio (difference ÷ total) / % Sugar (ratio x100%)
Hubba Bubba / 16.7 g / 8.6 g / 7.9 g / 0.47 / 47%
Bubble Yum / 30.6 g / 10.1 g / 20.5 g / 0.68 / 68%
Super Bubble / 20.0 g / 5.4 g / 14.6 g / 0.73 / 73%
Bazooka / 20.0 g / 6.7 g / 13.3 / 0.67 / 67%

Conclusion: The hypothesis was incorrect when different brands of bubble gum were tested. Super Bubble brand of bubble gum had the most sugar with 73%. Hubba Bubba had the least with 56%.
