In the name of God, I Lewis Ketchan of Morris township, Greene County and state of Pennsylvania, knowing that is is appointed that all men must die and while it please God to bless me with health and strenght and capacity of mind so to do, I make and publish this my last Will and Testament. First, I command my sole to God, who gave it, and my body to the earth from which it came, to--buried in a christian manner and worldly things which God has blessed me with -- I give , I will and give as follows. Frist -- I give unto my beloved wife Pheby all my household furnature and my Mansion House, and and she shall be supported of my Plantation as long as she remains my widow, and at her marriage or decase I order that my Real and personal property be sold and divided amonst my heirs, that is my daughter Abigialintermarried with William Tripp, Rhoda intermarried with Peter Vaness, Hannah intermarried with Mathias Pettit now decased-which I will unto her heirs, Sophia, intermarried with Samuel Day, Elsa intermarried with Daniel M. Johnston, Elizabeth intermarried with Orba Burt and Mary which is single, and my Grandson Nathaniel Ketcham to share alike except my daughter Mary is tohave in addition to an equal share, one cow, one beauro, bead and beading, oneteakettle, and one bake oven, one stew kettle, one set of knives and forks oneset of tea ware, one set of plates, one set of chaires. I do appoint and constitute Nathaniel Ketcham Executor and do revike all wills heretofore made anddo declare this to be my last will and testament, withness my hand and seal this 26th day of November 1849.

John Vannest, Tipton Vannest and Luther Vannest. whose place of residence is unknow, David Vannest of the State of Iowa, Phebe J. Young and her David Young, her husband, of the State of West Virginia, will take notice that Waldron S. Williams, administrator of the estate of Peter Vannest deceased on the 22 day of May, 1876, filed his petition in the Probate Court of Athens County, Ohio, alleging that the personal estate of said decedent is unsufficient to pay his debets and the change of administering his estate; that he died seized in fee simple of the following described real estate situate in said county, in section seven, (7). town four (4), range thirteen (13), and bounded as follows: Commencing six (6) chains and fifty-nine (59) links south of the center of the west line ofsaid section seven (7); thence east twenty (20) chains and sixty-four (64) links to the center of the south west quarter (1/4) of said section seven (7); thence south fifteen (15) chains and eighty (80) links; thence west twenty (20) chains and sixty-four (64) links; thence north fifteen (15) chains and eighty (80) links to the place of beginning. Containing thirty-two and sixty-one one hundredth (32 61-100) acres more or less.

Phoebe Jane and her husband David Young lived in West Virginia at the time of Phoebe Janes fathers death in 1876. Thomas Cemetery is located on the Thomas farm on Tug Fork, now owned by Bill Casto. The cemetery is in the yard of Bill Casto's log cabin.

David's second marriage was to Susan M. Tolley B.-1836 and d.- 1895, she is buried in Thomas Cemetery located on the old Thomas farm on Tug Fork, now owned by Bill casto. The cemetery is in the yard of Bill Casto's log cabin. This is where David and Phebe is buried. Susan was the daughter of John and Rebecca Tolley. Susan married David on February 19, 1879.

He married MARY JANE MILLER3 March 06, 1857 in Clark County, Indiana. She was born December 24, 1837 in Clarkstown, Clark County, Indiana, and died March 20, 1912 in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County, Iowa.

Notes for DAVID VANNEST:

David lived in the State of Iowa at the time of his father Peter Vannest, death in 1876.

David (1833-1915) was born in Ohio, came to Scott County , Iowa at the age of twenty-one (21). In 1857 he married Mary Jane Miller (1837-1912). She was born in Clark County, Indiana and came to Iowa with her parents at the age of nine. David and Mary farmed northwest of Davenport where their eight children were born - Rhoda, Jacob, Armitta, David M., Mary, Minnie, George, and John. They also raised a foster daughter Lucy Clements. The family moved from Scott County to Mahaska County in 1883. They drove their hogs and cattle to their new farm 2-1/2 miles northwest of New Sharon. During their travel to their new home, the hogs ate acorns ant the cattle grazed along the roadside.

In 1893 David sold the New Sharon farm and bought 80 acres in Lincoln Twp. Sec. 11, northwest of Oskaloosa, Iowa for $100.00 and acre, the first farm to sell at this price in Mahaska County. In 1903 he sold this farm and bought 14 acres located in sec. 12, across the highway east of where KBOE Radio is currently located.

David Vannest died at his home in Lincoln Township, Friday, Oct. 15, 1915, at 8:15 p.m., aged 81 years, 11 months, 1 days. Funeral Monday, Oct. 18, at 1:30 p.m., from Christian Church. Deceased was born in Ohio, Nov. 4, 1833, and has lived in the state of Iowa for the past sixty-five years, and in Mahaska county for thirty-one years. He leaves two daughters and three sons- Mrs. R. E. Clevenger, of Parnell, Iowa; David M. Vannest, of Taintor; George W. Vannest, of Rose Hill; Mrs. L. Vannest and John E. Vannest, of this city. His wife, one son, Jacob T., and one daughter, Melvina, preceded him in death.

VANNEST:- Mrs. Mary Jane Vannest, wife of David Vannest, died at her home, northwest of the city on Wednesday, March 24, 1912, aged 74 years, 2 months and 26 days. Mrs. Vannest was born in Indiana, Dec. 24, 1857, and came to Iowa sixty-five years ago. For the past twenty-eight years the family have resided in Mahaska County. She is survived by her husband and the following children: Mrs. Rhoda Eldevenger, Taintor, Iowa; David M. Vannest, Parnell, Iowa; Miss Mary L. Vannest, principal fifth ward school, Oskaloosa; Miss Minnie V. Vannest; George M. Vannest and John E. Vannest.

Mary Jane's father was Jacob Miller and his father was John B. Miller.

Sandberg--Mary Vannest Sandberg, 81, of Delta died in Des Monies Saturday evening. Mrs. Sandberg was for many years a teacher in the local schools in Manhaska and Keokuk county. At one time she was principal of the Whittier school. She is survived by her husband, John Sandberg of Delta, a sister, Minnie V. Vannest of Oskaloosa, and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held in Wilcox-Garland chapel at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, with the Rev. M. Dwight Walker in charge. Burial will be in Forest cemetery.

Sundberg-Van Ness

The marriage of John Sundberg of What Cheer and Mary L. Van Ness of Delta took place in the lounge of the First Christian church at 7 o'clock Monday evening, September 30, 1929. Rev. G. E. Purdy performed the ring ceremony in the presence of John E. Van Ness, brother of the bride, Mrs. Anna R. Cowan, Miss Cornie Cowan, and Mrs. Cora Leslie.

Mrs. Sundberg for thirty-three years has been a popular teacher in Mahaska and Keokuk counties. At one time she was principal at Whittier school. She was a graduate of Penn college and also studied at the state college at Ames.

The bridegroom is connected with the tile factory at What Cheer and they will make their home at Sunny View farm near Delta.

Minnie Vannest- Mahaska County on Aug. 3, 1957. At the time of death she was 84 years old. Minnie was a single retired school teacher. She was born in Scott County Iowa on Dec 1, 1872. Her parents were David and Mary Vannest.

Vannest-- Miss Minnie Vannest, age 84, of 701 North C Street, suffered a fatal heart attack Saturday afternoon in the Mahaska State bank. Miss Vannest, the daughter of David and Mary J. Miller Vannest, was born Dec. 1, 1872, in Scott county, and was a school teacher for many years, teaching in the rural schools at the beginning of her career. She then taught in Moorhead and Boone, being in the Boone schools for over 20 years.

She is survived by one brother, John Vannest of Deltha and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at the Garland chapel Tuesday, Aug. 6, at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. Richard Goins of the Frist Christain church in charge. Burial will be in the Forrest Cemetery.

John Vannest (1880-1962) was a farmer and orddained minister. Due to his health, he did only substitute preaching. He lived on his farm at Springfield, Iowa. John never married.

VANNEST - John Vannest age 82, resident of the Springfield neighborhood north of Delta, died Saturday afternoon at home of his niece, miss Ina May Clevenger of Taintor, He was born in Scott County Iowa, the son of David and Mary Miller Vannest, and had resided in mahaska County since 1883.

Surviving with Miss Clevenger are other nieces and nephews.

Services were at the Garland chaple Monday, April 16, at 2 p.m. with burial at Forest cemetery. Evangelist Raymond lyon of the Church of Christ.
