Welcome to the University of Dundee, and the School of Business. I trust that you had a smooth arrival here and hope that you have enjoyed a warm welcome on campus. I am very much looking forward to getting to know you over the course of the coming year; we usually form an impressively international group which allows us to all learn more about cultures that differ from our own.
You are about to embark on an academically challenging, but very enjoyable, learning experience. I hope that you embrace this experience fully by working hard and also by enjoying the many opportunities that Dundee has to offer. The School offers a number of taught postgraduate programmes that attract students from all over the world and, as such, provides you with a unique opportunity to make friends with people from many different cultures and with different academic backgrounds.
The staff have very diverse research interests and I would encourage you to take time to familiarise yourself with the work of our academic staff whose details can be found on the School of Business webpages. Finally, I sincerely hope that you have a very enjoyable and successful year with us but, should you face any difficulties that may impact upon your studies, please keep me or your programme director informed.
Very best wishes
Suzanne

The MSc (Accounting and Finance; Accounting, Management and Strategy; Finance; International Accounting) and MRes programmes are 12 month programmes of study from September 2016 to end of August 2017. Students are expected to be in attendance for the full 12-month duration of the programme. Students do not have a long summer vacation as they should be working on their dissertation during this time. Students must seek permission from the Programme Director and complete an absence form on E-Vision if they plan to be away from the University for any period of time (see 3.2).
The MSc Accountancy programme includes three 20-credit modules taught over either one or two semesters (depending on module choice) and the completion of a 30-credit professional accountancy project. The project can be completed either on-campus or at a distance.
3.2 Attendance
Attendance Policy
This policy is intended to be supportive and encouraging in order to help students to be successful in their studies. In order that students benefit from the investment that they are making in their studies, the School recognises a responsibility to monitor attendance and to act on non-attendance. Good attendance leads to a more rewarding and interesting experience for students and is, of course, clearly correlated with exam success. In addition a good attendance record encourages, and is a sign of, professionalism which employers may ask about when seeking a reference.
Attendance Requirements
You are expected to attend all lectures, tutorials, workshops, labs and meetings with your tutors. Attendance will be taken at classes.
Absence and Illness
If you intend to be away from Dundee, you should inform the Programme Administrator of your planned absence via email. Any unplanned, unauthorised absence should also be explained through email. If you are ill, you will need to report your absence to the Programme Administrator, on the first day of your absence and provide medical evidence for any absence exceeding 5 working days.
3.3 Programme Content and Structure
The Programme Content and Structure of our MSc Programmes are shown in Annex 1. You will be registered for the MSc Degree for which you have applied. Some of the MSc Degree programmes offer a choice of optional modules and you may consult your Programme Director regarding your module choice. Once you are registered for your programme and module choice, you may only change this with the approval of the Programme Director or the Director of Taught Postgraduate Studies.
3.4 Module Outlines
The content of each module is detailed in the module outlines which can be found on My Dundee in the organisation called ‘School of Social Sciences under the Discipline UDSB’ to which you will have access. Details regarding module organisation, teaching staff, module aims and learning outcomes, contents and reading, assessment and feedback mechanisms are covered in these handouts.
If you have any concerns regarding any of the modules please go and see the module leader or module tutor; their contact details are available from the module outlines.
4. ASSESSMENT
4.1 Assessment and Submission of Assessed Coursework
The assessment requirements for each module are detailed in the module outline. It is your responsibility to be aware of the requirements of the module. You will be required to submit your coursework by the specified submission date. These dates are not subject to negotiation (see penalties for late submission on MyDundee). You should hand in two copies of all pieces of coursework. Failure to do this may mean that your coursework will not be marked. It is your responsibility to plan your work so that you meet deadlines. In the case of exceptional extenuating circumstances you must contact the module leader prior to the specified submission date to seek an extension.
