UK to Hold 3rd Annual ACC Conference “Cardiology 2006:

Insights and Innovations”

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 6, 2006) − The University of Kentucky College of Medicine, in conjunction with UK HealthCare's Gill Heart Institute and the Saha Foundation, will hold the 3rd Annual American College of Cardiology (ACC) Kentucky chapter’s conference from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort on Newtown Pike in Lexington. The ACC conference is being held in conjunction with Gill Heart Institute’s Annual Research Day on Oct. 13.

Participants invited to attend the ACC conference include: cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, family practitioners, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, cardiothoracic nurses, cardiology residents and public health system professionals. The conference will target cardiology healthcare professionals in Kentucky and the border areas of Ohio, Indiana, Tennessee and West Virginia.

The program director is Dr. Steven R. Steinhubl, UK associate professor of medicine and director of cardiovascular research and education, UK Gill Heart Institute. Program co-chairs are Dr. David J. Moliterno, UK chief of cardiovascular medicine and professor and vice-chair of medicine, UK Gill Heart Institute, and Dr. Sibu P. Saha, UK professor of surgery and chairman, directors council, UK Gill Heart Institute.

main goal and the foundation continually supports this endeavor. I am pleased that during the ACC conference, the foundation will award $1,000 scholarships to four nurses and one medical student.”

Guest speakers are Dr. Shamik Aikat, UK assistant professor of medicine; Dr. Mushabbar Syed, UK associate professor of medicine and director of cardiovascular CT and MR imaging, Gill Heart Institute; Dr. Albert B. Mercer, ACC Kentucky chapter governor, Green River Heart Institute; Dr. Richard C. Becker, professor of medicine and director, Cardiovascular Thrombosis Center, Duke University; Dr. James T. Dove, ACC president-elect and clinical professor of medicine, division of cardiology, Southern Illinois School of Medicine; Dr. Robert D. Dowling, associate professor of surgery, University of Louisville School of Medicine and Dr. Sergio Fazio, professor of medicine and pathology and co-director, atherosclerosis research unit, division of cardiovascular medicine, Vanderbilt University.

After completing this course, participants will be able to: explain the current and future role of CT angiography in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with atherosclerotic disease; recognize the available therapies and indications for mechanical treatment of patients with systolic and diastolic cardiac dysfunction; understand the benefits and risks of a wide variety of antithrombotic agents used in the treatment of patients with acute coronary syndromes; and expose the audience to future technologies, both mechanical and pharmacological, that will play a central role in the treatment of patients with atherosclerotic disease.
