NCPD Welcomes Katherine Bernard Internship in Occupational Therapy & Spirituality
Hello my name is Katherine Bernard and I am working as an intern with the NCPD as my final rotation to complete my doctorate in occupational therapy from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. I am originally from Seattle, Washington and I graduated from Franciscan University in 2011 with a Bachelors of Arts and Sciences in Theology and Mental Health and Human Services.
With my background in occupational therapy, I hope to provide additional knowledge of disability and the importance that participation in meaningful occupations has in promoting health and well-being. I hope to explore the issues of addressing spirituality in healthcare, especially in the rehabilitation process and to connect occupational therapy practitioners with the resources of the NCPD in order to better address those needs.
Part of my work will include a blog that will provide insight into the work of the NCPD and its various councils and task forces, studying the current literature on the topics of disability and spirituality, exploring more research and grant funding opportunities, and compiling a toolkit for occupational therapy practitioners that can be accessed through the NCPD website. I am greatly looking forward to this new opportunity to learn from and serve the Church in this way and I welcome the opportunity to speak to anyone who is interested in topics mentioned above. I can be reached at and be sure and stay tuned for my blog, SpiritualOT! Thank you very much!
You can make a difference
in the faith lives of individuals who live with a disability: make a small monthly donation to NCPD. $10, $20 or $25 per month will enable NCPD to provide resources to dioceses and parishes to ensure meaningful participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of the Church and society. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder From Maggie Rousseau, Director, Disabilities Ministry, Archdiocese of Atlanta
On September 9th at 9:00 am we are asking parishes to ring their bells in support of our families living with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Georgia Governor Nathan Deal signed a proclamation recognizing September 9th as FASD Awareness Day thanks to the efforts of parishioner Melissa Cook. The 9/9/9 theme recognizes of 9 months of alcohol free pregnancy. The program originated in Canada and is supported by many faiths.
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders are 100% preventable when pregnant women abstain from alcohol. This is not just a disability issue, but a Justice and Peace issue as well - given the personal medical and social histories of many of our inmates in local and state prisons. It is important to know that with treatment and appropriate strategies, children and adults with FASD can succeed. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has a link for information about resources for families: www.cdc.gov/fasd - http://www.cdc.gov/fasd .
