All school procedures and policies from each school’s student handbook will be followed. Accommodations for students with Individual Education Plans (IEP’s) or Personalized Education Plans (PEP or 504’s) will be followed. Conferences may be scheduled upon request.
COURSE RATIONALE:
The Spanish language is the third most widely spoken language in the world according to Ethnologue 1996, after Chinese and English. The United States is the fifth largest Spanish speaking country in the world behind Mexico, Colombia, Spain and Argentina. In addition, the Hispanic market in the United States is worth over $630,000,000 a year, according to an article in National Geographic Society. The Southeast is one of the regions in the United States with the most growth in Spanish speaking population for the past 20 years. Along with the development and progress of information technology, studying Spanish is an important skill to have in order to be more competitive in this new millennium.
COURSE PREREQUISITES:
Open mindedness, cultural, intellectual and spiritual curiosity, and the willingness to challenge one’s self.
REQUIRED FEES:
There will be a fee of $3.50 for a writing activities workbook.
PROPOSED OBJECTIVES TO BE COVERED:
Students will continue working and practicing the skills of: listening, speaking, reading and writing through the learning of the alphabet, numbers, vocabulary, dialogue, oral and written translations, demonstrations of commands and grammatical exercises. In addition, use of the Imperfect and Past Tense; the Future and Conditional will be introduced.

State Department of Education Foreign Language Guidelines in concordance with the adopted textbook for Spanish by the Baldwin County Board of Education.
STUDENTS RESOURCE TITLES AND INFORMATION (Textbook, Workbook):
The textbook to be used for this class is entitled: Abordo, Glencoe Spanish II. In addition there will be a writing activities workbook and student tape manual, as well as the audio program, overhead transparencies, and Nosotros and Nuestro Mundo (Cultural Resource Exercise Publication).
MATERIALS NEEDED:
1 Three Ring–Hole Spiral Notebook
1 Blue or Black Pen
1 Red Pen
1 Pencil
1 Eraser
1 Spanish/English Dictionary (approximate cost $6.00)
ASSESSMENTS TO BE USED:
Class work assignments; homework assignments; vocabulary quizzes; tests (grammar); chapter tests; oral dialogue; projects; pronunciation evaluation; mid-term and final exams.
PROPOSED ASSESSMENT SCHEDULE (Project due dates, Oral Presentations, Tests, etc.):
Every Wednesday: Vocabulary and Spelling Quizzes
Every Friday: Grammar Test (covered during the week)
Every Day: Class work and Homework assignments
Chapter Tests: At the End of Each Chapter
GRADE DETERMINATION PROCEDURES (Detailed explanation of how grades are averaged):
To determine 1st and 2nd nine week grades, the point system will be used. Each assignment, quiz, test, dialogue, chapter test, etc. will have a number of points assigned to it. At the end of the nine (9) weeks the student’s points will be added and then divided by the total number of points possible. The result will be the student’s grade.
MAKE-UP WORK PROCEDURES:
A student will be allowed no more than three (3) days per excused absence to make-up work and/or a test following the day they return to school. After that period of time has elapsed the student will receive a zero (0). The student will be responsible to know what work or test he/she has missed and to contact the teacher within the make-up work/test period.
GENERAL CLASSROOM PROCEDURES (Management and Discipline Procedures):
The student will follow the School Handbook rules in the class. At all times mutual respect and courtesy are greatly desirable, as is a mature and dignified demeanor. In order to maintain a clean and healthy environment no food, drink or chewing gum will be allowed in the classroom.
Books and other materials need to be brought every day to class. Failure to follow the classroom rules and procedures will result in break, after school and/or Saturday detention.
PROCEDURES FOR CONFERENCE REQUESTS:
Conferences may be requested at the beginning or end of class, and can be scheduled during the teacher’s planning period (3rd period).
