Intro (how do you capture their attention and get them interested?):
I will start by reviewing the material that we covered the day before about prefixes. We will review the definition of prefixes as well as the five prefixes discussed (un-,re-,dis-,pre-, and bi). We will also review the example words discussed during the previous class.
Body (what comes after your interesting intro?)
Next, I will introduce and pass out the prefix practice worksheet. Once each student has a worksheet I will explain the directions to them. In the first section, the students are to read the definition of a word that contains a prefix and they must write down the word being described in the provided space. In the second section, the students will add one of the prefixes to the root word to make a new word. The students will be asked to work independently and quietly on this practice work sheet. After the students have finished their worksheet they will be asked to turn it in to the writing basket for grading.
For our last activity, the students will work on creating a Prefix Pet. The students will be asked to make up a fictional animal. To describe their animal, they must come up with a sentence that contains at least three words with prefixes. Once they have come up with the sentence for their Prefix Pet then they will be allowed to draw the Prefix Pet above the sentence they created. Their Prefix Pets will also be collected for grading when completed.
Closure (purposeful summary-help them remember today or anticipate tomorrow):
If time allows, some of the students will be asked to share their Prefix Pets with their class.
Homework: None
Assessment: (How will you assess if they have mastered your objectives? Be specific.)
I will assess their understanding by grading their worksheet on correctness. As for the Prefix Pet, I will assess them on their sentence that they created (Does the sentence make sense? Did they use the right prefixes in the right context etc.) as well as on if their drawing correctly represented the sentence.
Pre-assessment: (How will you know if your students already know what you are teaching?)
