SPSU ARTS 2001, COLEBECK: SPECIAL PROJECT- Fall 2005

ART REPORT: Artist; Artwork by that artist; Museum or location artwork is located.

Each student will create a special project reflecting class activities as a requirement of the class. The project will be factored into the final grade and is worth approximately 20% of the total class grade.

Read and follow the directions carefully. Finished Project due Wed. Nov. 30, 2005.

Objective: Student selects an artist, (or architect) and conducts research on the artist, identifies artworks and where they are located, compiles information on the locations, then prepares a special report composed of several parts. (May use artist selected for Hat Project or select another artist.)

THE PROJECT IS COMPOSED OF FOUR PARTS:

One: Artist Overview; Two: 5 Clues; Three: Oral Presentation; Four: Museum/location to see artwork

Parts 1-4 submitted together with a Cover sheet. (Folder, Plastic cover optional)

All papers: 8 ½ x 11 size, Typed with 12 point font size, sequential order of parts.

COVER SHEET: Typed, 1 page Cover Sheet: Student name, address, telephone and e-mail, (top half of paper); (lower half of paper) SPSU Arts 2001, Special Project/Report, Selected Artist/Architect, locations.

PART ONE: ARTIST OVERVIEW - WRITTEN REPORT: 1 page Artist Overview Format, 2 website homepages, (Use a variety of resources including textbooks, web sites*. Visit two web sites with information on your artist. Download/print out the first page from two sites* and submit with report.)[A good Web site should have: a basic biography; identification of the artist, his/her artistic style, the period or movement of art the artist is associated with; influences upon the artist, contributions made by the artist, references to art of the time and historical and social context of when the artist lived and created.]

Research/compile information in the following specific order. (Submitted for Hat Project, October 28, 2005, print out again and submit.)

  1. Who- Artist’s name
  2. What- type of artist (example: painter, sculptor, printmaker etc)
  3. What- style, period, movement of art associated with (ex.: cubism, expressionism, minimalist, etc)
  4. What – known for (what type of art created,)
  5. When-Date born, Country of birth, date died, age at time of death
  6. When-time- century, decade
  7. Where-location of birth, country created in, country associated with
  8. Why- importance significance, contribution to art world
  9. Most Famous Artwork
  1. Other Artworks created by the artist (Hat Project selection) and a few other important artworks:

PART TWO:Composing Five Clues about the artist. 1 page with clues; 1 page with visual examples and identification for 2 artworks.

Page with clues: (Submitted for Hat Project, review the clues, revise and resubmit). The goal is to write 5 clues that slowly revealinformation regarding the artist researched and artwork created by the artist, including the most famous artwork. Fellow classmates listen to all 5 clues then guess who the artist is. The clues need to be carefully formulated. The most successful clues with provide information about the artist without giving away who it is too quickly.

Page with visual examples and identification of them: most famous artwork (Part One #9, Part One #10 other artwork / hat project. (Hat project: selected artwork with artist or person in artwork wearing a hat). (Photocopy, postcard, print or download: color or black and white.)

PART THREE: ORAL PRESENTATION. 1 page sketch what hat looked like (Instructor determines presentation date.)Student shares the clues written for Part Two with the class. (Hat project presentation Oct 31, 2005, wear hat.)

PART FOUR: identifies and researches the museums / locations of artwork #9 & #10. 1page of typed information and 2 website homepages, (if no home page is available provide mailing address and telephone etc.) (Museums where #9most famous and #10 other artwork (Hat Project can be found.).

Set #9 Most Famous Artwork:

  1. Identify the Most Famous Artwork; Title, Artist, Date, Medium, size,
  2. Name of Museum, Institution or Location;
  3. Where located (city, state, country);
  4. Scope and type of the Permanent Collection;
  5. What museum known as or for, reputation etc.;
  6. Specialty, or area of focus;
  7. What not to miss, the “Must See”;
  8. Where artwork can be found within or at the facility;
  9. Admission fees;
  10. Hours of operation;
  11. Restrictions and/or special information;

Set #2 for artwork #10 Hat project or another significant artwork:

  1. Name of Artwork; Title. Artist, Date, Medium, size
  2. Name of Museum, institution or Location;
  3. Where located (city, state, country);
  4. Scope and type of the Permanent Collection;
  5. What museum known as or for, reputation etc.;
  6. Specialty, or area of focus;
  7. What not to miss, the “Must See”;
