Our

Community

Helpers

By Ellen Weber, Ed.S., CCC-SLP, 2008

A community is the neighborhood where we live, work and go to school.

It takes a lot of hard-working people to make a community a nice and a safe place to live. They are called community helpers.

Police officers keep us safe from people who break the law. They …

… catch robbers … and send them

to jail.

… direct traffic. … give out

speeding tickets.

A police officer can

be a man or a woman.

They wear a uniform that is different for each community.

The place they work

is called a

police station.

They have lots of ways to get around.

A firefighter puts out fires,

rescues people and animals,

and teaches people about fire safety.

A fire fighter

can be a

man or a woman.

They wait for your call at the

fire station.

When the alarm goes off, they put on

special clothing

that protects them.

Sometimes they can look very scary,

but you don’t have to be afraid of them. They are there to help us.

Fire fighters use many vehicles to help them fight fires.

Not all fire vehicles are red. Some of the newer ones are white or bright yellow-green.

Most fire stations also

have paramedics that go

with them to the fires.

Paramedics help people who are hurt or very sick. You don’t have to have a fire to call a paramedic. They will come to you anytime you are hurt very badly.

They might take you for a ride in their ambulance to see a doctor at the hospital.

When you go to a hospital, you will see some more community helpers, the doctors and nurses.

Doctors help people who are hurt or sick. A doctor can be either a man or a woman.

Doctors have helpers, called nurses.

There are other types of doctors, too. The doctor who fixes your teeth is called a dentist.

A veterinarian is a doctor for animals.

We just say “vet” for short.

They all help our community, especially in an emergency. There are lots of other people who help by providing services:

The garbage collector

picks up our trash.

The mail carrier

brings our mail.

Repairmen fix things

like the phone, the TV, the electricity, and lots of other things we use everyday.

There are people who help us by driving us where we need to go…

… like bus drivers and taxi drivers.

There are people who teach our children what they need to know so they will grow up and help their community.

Who could that be?

These are just a few of the many people who help their communities to be a better place to live.

Will YOU be a helper

in your community

someday?
