Advanced Placement Examinations for Non-PublicSchool

Students Living in LoudounCounty

Students who are legal residents of LoudounCounty but are not enrolled in Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) may participate in Advanced Placement (AP) examinations administered by the Guidance Departments in LCPS, by following the required registration procedures and guidelines.

Test takers are reminded that each AP examination is based on the rigorous curriculum established by the College Board and that regulations for the administration of the examination must adhere to the internationally-standardized regulations of the College Board. Further information regarding AP examinations is available at

Results are mailed to the student’s home by the College Board around the middle of July. Detailed information about AP examinations may be found at under the College Board Tests tab.

Procedures for Registration

  • On or before March 16, the student or student’s parent/guardian must register for the AP examination(s) by completing and submitting the “Registration Form for Advanced Placement Examination(s) for Loudoun Students Not Enrolled in LCPS.” The form and information packet are available at the high school in the family’s attendance zone. Individuals interested in obtaining the information and forms on-line will find them at: Directions for Home Schooled Students 12 - PIO.doc.
  • The completed registration form must be submitted to the Guidance Director at the local high school along with the fee(s) for the examination(s). The fee is $87 per examination. A list of high school contact information is attached.
  • Students may be eligible for AP Exam fee reductions resulting in a fee of $57 per exam if any of the following criteria apply:
  • The student’s family receives assistance under part A of Title IV of the Social Security Act.
  • The student is a member of a family whose taxable income for the preceding year did not exceed 185 percent of the poverty level as established by the U.S. Census Bureau. The table on page two lists annual family incomes, by family size, at 185 percent of the poverty level. If the AP student’s family income did not exceed the amount listed in the appropriate row and column, he or she qualifies for a College Board fee reduction.

If the test is not being administered to LCPS students at the LCPS high school nearest the student’s home, the director will assist the student in locating another LCPS high school where the test is being offered.

  • Some high schools require pre-administration sessions, in accordance with College Board guidelines. Students who do not attend the high school will be informed regarding the time and place of the pre-administration session and must attend the pre-administration session. If the high school does not conduct a pre-administration session, the work of that session will be completed with the entire group prior to administration of the examination.
