Job Description

Position Title:Team Member

Reports To:Team Leader and/or Tim Egli (Owner)

Position Overview

This position performs a variety of landscape & hardscape activities that include, but are not limited to the following: planting, weeding, digging, spreading topsoil and other materials, hardscape construction, basic electricity, basic plumbingand equipment operation – all under minimal supervision.

Essential Responsibilities

  1. Performs planting and related activities.
  2. Moves materials and equipment and performs related duties to assist in landscaping and hardscaping.
  3. Performs routine seasonal maintenance for landscape materials that include pruning, trimming, weeding, herbicide application, and clean up.
  4. Digs holes and trenches and excavates for hardscaping features using picks and shovels or related equipment.
  5. Hauls or spreads topsoil, gravel, sand, mulch, or related materials using wheelbarrows and rakes.
  6. Hand-finishes grade, and apply seed, erosion control fabric, or sod.
  7. Performs routine construction tasks, such as building forms for concrete using hand tools.
  8. Installs paver patios, stone or segmental block retaining walls.
  9. Installs water features; ie, pondless waterfall, garden pond, etc.
  10. Installs low-voltage landscape lighting.
  11. Reads landscape design prints, reviews prints with the Team Leader, and implements the landscape and/or hardscape construction plan.
  12. Understands elevations and uses this knowledge to assist the Team Leader in executing the construction plan.
  13. Operates, proficiently, a variety of mechanical equipment, including back hoes, plate compactors, stone grinders, drills, gas or electric saws, chain saws, excavator, front end loader, skid steer, sod cutter, string trimmer, cut off saw, blower, and hedge trimmer.
  14. Should know and be able to use the following manual equipment, but not limited to: leaf rake, wheelbarrow, shovel, broom, hoe, cultivator, water hose, hand pruner, hedge shears, and burlap bags.
  15. Operates and licensed to operate automatic and stick shift vehicles, such as dump trucks and truck and trailer combinations.
  16. Maintains crew equipment and notifies the Team Leader of needed repairs.
  17. Assists the team leader in interacting with clients by way of introductions at the beginning of a job, answering questions, responding to client requests, making reasonable changes to the plan, and providing a walk-through at the job’s completion – all while projecting a professional image.
  18. Assists the team leader in completing the necessary paperwork including timesheets, work orders, change orders, material requisitions, and client tickets.
  19. Assists the team leader in planning and organizing the job, ensuring that sufficient resources and materials are available. Also ensures that job is completed in the most time-efficient manner – but maintain that all projects are completed within quality standards and practices.
  20. Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the team leader.
  21. Maintains a clean and safe work environment, including the work site and equipment.
  22. Loads equipment and materials on and off trucks and trailers.

Knowledge and Experience

  • A high school degree or GED is preferred. Experience in the landscaping field is also preferable.
  • Candidate must be able to read and write.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, math skills, job planning skills, and mechanical aptitude are a must.
  • The successful individual will have a working knowledge of standard construction practices, basic understanding of electricity, and basic piping and plumbing concepts.

Certifications

  • This position does not require, but encourages that the individual be working on the following certifications and licensing:
  • Certified Nursery Professional with Iowa Nursery Landscape Assct. (INLA)
  • Basic Level Contractor Certification (ICPI)
  • First Aid / CPR
  • This position requires that the individual be working on the following certifications and licensing within time frame agreed to with owner when hired:
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

Work Environment

Physical Demands

The physical demands outlined are examples of the type of demands the employee will encounter on the job site.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; crouch; stoop or kneel; reach with hands and arms; talk; and hear. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 80 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job are dictated by the CDL requirements.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather (heat or cold), and moving mechanical equipment.
In addition, job sites are located on both residential and commercial property. The employee may also occasionally be exposed to the homeowner’s pets.

Any employee that requires medications under emergency situations (ie, allergic reaction, asthma, etc), must keep all applicable medications in their daily lunch container with typed instructions and review with their Crew Members or Team Leader instructions for administration if individual cannot self-administer.

Working Relationships

The employee will work closely with members of the team, Team Leader, Office Manager, Owner, and clients.

  • Adhere to company policies and standards.
  • Able to work as a team member.
  • Expected to learn and demonstrate the proper use of all equipment within 30 days of date of hire.
  • Expected to demonstrate proficiency in the use of hand tools, power tools and equipment according to company standards.
  • Expected to maintain a good attitude to work, customers, vendors, and other associates.
  • Must be able to pass the safety/training examination.
  • Able to prune, clean & detail plant material.
  • Able to properly plant standard size material (container plants & trees, and B&B plants & trees).
  • Able to identify by common name frequently used Egli Landscapes plants (shrubs, perennials, and/or trees).
  • Able to identify 5 common weeds and 5 common pests.
  • Recognizing drainage deficiencies and problem soil.
