Ground-breaking ceremony near Frankfurt (Germany)

GLS builds second EU computer centre

Amsterdam, 14 March 2011. GLS invests approximately four million euros in even more data security. The pan-European parcel service is constructing another European computer centre near Frankfurt.

Every day, more than 20 million data sets are under way parallel to the circa 1.2 million parcels transported by GLS throughout Europe. Currently, the main collection point for the data is the computer centre at the Group’s European hub. “Today, modern information technology is just as important as the physical transportation network”, says Johannes Ruttinger, Chief Information Officer at GLS.

At the new computer centre, GLS will keep backup systems ready for all of its processes. “The productive systems will remain in the first centre, but at the second centre everything will be mirrored and run synchronously”, says Johannes Ruttinger. “This way we can switch over within ten minutes in case of an emergency.” GLS will also use the “duplicate computer centre” near Frankfurt for statistical and reporting systems.

Construction work began at the end of February on the premises of the Schaafheim GLS depot near Frankfurt. In the upcoming months, another state-of-the-art server farm will be created here. The building is scheduled to be completed in August. Another month will then be needed to install the technical systems. GLS expects to put the computer centre into operation in October of this year.

The 400 square metre building provides space for several hundred high-performance computers that are connected to each other. A series of security and emergency systems ensure smooth operations.
