Experience:
Certified History/Social Studies (7-12) Teacher (NY State) Haverling Central School, Bath, NY, 2006-2010
Teaching on a daily basis provided me with the best of experience as I earned a Master's degree in education in night classes while spending significant time on weekends researching why attrition and failure rates are so considerably high along with the exploration of programmatic initiatives in character/ethics education and what potential they hold for all of our schools nationwide.
Educational Consultant (Independent professional serving post-secondary institutions from New England to Florida) 2002-2006
Working directly with Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Deans, my work entailed reviewing the workings of the Admissions & Marketing offices, interviewing staff and students, and analyzing the numbers, mission congruency, and outcomes. From there I drafted a report and conducted meetings chronicling strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities at each institution.
Director of Undergraduate Admissions, Notre Dame of NH, Manchester, NH , 2000-2002
Responsible for generation of all leads, establishment of travel calendar, creation of promotional materials, and creation of on-campus visit programs. Responsible for hiring, motivating, and retaining a staff of 8 along with 30 part-time student workers. I also established articulation agreements with community colleges in region and facilitated meetings for statewide Guidance Association. As a result of these efforts among many others, Notre Dame attained its strongest numbers (leads, applications, deposits, etc.) in their 50-year history.
Jones Solutions, Bath, NY, 1997-2000
I worked with individual families to help create a list of colleges that would be a good fit for their children. This entailed extensive meetings, a review of accomplishments, coordinating visits and negotiating scholarship offers.
Drexel University, Assistant Director of Admissions, Philadelphia, PA, 1994-1997
Responsible for all recruitment in NY State and New England. Qualifying the interest level of more than 3,000 students per year was the first step towards success. Sixteen weeks of travel per year canvassing the terrain was done in conjunction with the selection and training of 20 student aides who worked 8 to 15 hours per week at my behest. Because I more than doubled the paid deposits from NY State in my first year, I was then given New England and asked to do the same. Similar results then ensued. I also had direct responsibility to work with the Deans of the College of Engineering and College of Design Arts, respectively. This collaboration entailed creating new promotional literature and targeting geographical pockets where new interest could be cultivated. In addition, I took a proactive stance in helping to move the Honors Program forward so that highly competitive students would have another reason to seriously consider attending the University. As a means to better familiarize the public with our many fine academicians, I led teams of faculty and administrators out into the major markets of NY and New England so that a microcosm of the University might be theirs for easy access.
Keuka College, Assistant Director of Admissions, Keuka Park, NY, 1987-1994.
Responsible for recruitment in Finger Lakes, Central New York, and the Adirondacks. It is instructive to note that the College was in a state of danger when I arrived due to lagging enrollment. In part because of the strategies I employed, the number of full-time students burgeoned from 515 to 920 (full capacity) in my tenure at the College. My territory, in the way of production, exceeded the total of the other three territories combined. I designed and implemented a scholarship competition that drew acclaim; a Guidance Counselor initiative that created new friends; and co-authored an Honors Program that provided appropriate challenge for an entirely new tier of students. These accomplishments, among others, brought about my recognition from peers throughout the state leading to my selection as the New York State Association of College Admissions Counselor's Presidential Award recipient. Please note also that my initiatives were designed to facilitate recruitment of a “graduating class”. This was not something that was not asked of me, but instead something that I knew was in the best interest of the College. The cost of having to replace a student (recruitment cost) far exceeds the dollar amount necessary to maintain a population and see it through to graduation. In addition, satisfied and successful students recruit for you in most prodigious fashion and a Counselor Assistant program I created allowed for continual conversations between current students and those who were considering us.
