Used on fine homes, distinctive commercial buildings, and notable historical restorations throughout the country and world locations, Old Carolina brick add a unique warmth and creative flavor to any architectural design. Our handmade brick are primarily used by discerning designers and architects to create visually stimulating textures, patterns, and color palettes.
Based on our commitment to quality and authenticity, Old Carolina brick are each hand molded and then hard fired to provide the beautiful bisques, hues, and unique colors identical to those of brick made centuries ago. Our hand crafting process imparts distinctive folds, finger marks, and particular surface irregularities for individual characterization of each brick. Old Carolina handmade brick provide a unique appearance unequalled by conventional mass produced brick. Special shapes and custom brick sizes are available, and can be readily created from customer designs. Old Carolina bricks are used as pavers as well as face brick, and are often used on beautiful landscaping applications.

1.4 DESIGN / PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Work shall conform to ANSI A41.1 Building Code Requirements for Masonry, ANSI A41.2 Building Code Requirements for Reinforced Masonry or equivalent sections of the applicable Code.

1.5 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit under provisions of Section 01 30 00 - Administrative Requirements.

B. Product Data: Manufacturer's data sheets on each product to be used, including:

1. Preparation instructions and recommendations.

2. Storage and handling requirements and recommendations.

3. Installation methods.

C. Verification Samples: Furnish not less than five individual brick as samples, showing extreme variations in color and texture.

D. Manufacturer's Certificates: Test reports to certify products meet or exceed specified requirements.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Manufacturer Qualifications: Minimum 10 years manufacturing similar products.

B. Installer Qualifications: Minimum 3 years installing similar products.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include a mock-up if the project size and/or quality warrant taking such construction. The following is one example of how a mock-up on a large project might be specified. When deciding on the extent of the mock-up, consider all the major different types of work on the project.

C. Mock-Up: Mock-up or sample panels shall be used to review brick and mortar color and serve as the standard of workmanship for the Project.

1. Construct mockup panel approximately 4 feet (1.2 m) long by 3 feet (1 m) high, showing the proposed color range, texture, bond, mortar , tooling, cleaning, and workmanship. All brick shipped for the sample shall be included in the panel.

2. Locate where directed by Architect.

3. When required, provide a separate panel for each type of brick or mortar.

4. Do not start work until Architect/Engineer has accepted sample panel.

5. Use panel as standard of comparison for all masonry work built of same material.

6. Do not destroy or move panel until work is completed and accepted by Architect.

D. Brick Test Reports:

1. Bricks sampled and tested in accordance with ASTM C 67.

2. Test Reports:

a. Testing and reports shall be completed by an independent laboratory.

b. Test reports for each type of building and facing brick shall be submitted to the Architect/Engineer for review.

c. Test reports shall indicate:

1) Compressive strength.

2) 24 hour cold water absorption.

3) 5 hour boiling absorption.

4) Saturation coefficient.

5) Initial rate of absorption.

6) Efflorescence.

1.7 ALLOWANCES

A. Include under provisions of Division 01 Section - Allowances.

B. Allowance includes each type of clay masonry unit included in this section. Installation is included in this section and is part of Contract Sum/Price.

1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

A. Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation.

B. Store brick off the ground to prevent contamination by mud, dust or other materials likely to cause staining or other defects.

C. Cover all materials with a nonstaining waterproof membrane material when necessary to protect from elements.

D. Store different types of materials separately.

1.9 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's recommended limits.

B. Protection of Work:

1. Wall Covering:

a. During erection, cover top of wall with strong nonstaining waterproof membrane at end of each day or shutdown.

b. Cover partially completed walls when work is not in progress.

c. Extend cover minimum of 24 inches (610 mm) down both sides.

d. Hold cover securely in place.

2. Load Application:

a. Do not apply uniform floor or roof loading for at least 12 hours after building masonry columns or wall.

b. Do not apply concentrated loads for at least 3 days after building masonry columns or walls.

3. Stain Prevention:

a. Prevent grout or mortar from staining the face of masonry.

b. Remove immediately grout or mortar in contact with face of masonry.

c. Protect all sills, ledges and projections from droppings of mortar.

d. Protect base of wall from rain-splashed mud and mortar splatter.

e. Scaffold boards shall be turned on edge when work is not in progress.

2.5 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Minimum Compressive Strength (ASTM C 216 and ASTM C 902): 5000 psi.

B. Maximum Initial Rate of Absorption (IRA) (ASTM C 216 and ASTM C 902): 50 g/min/30 sq.in.

C. Maximum Absorption, 24 Hour Submersion in Cold Water (ASTM C 216 and ASTM C 902): 10 percent.

D. Efflorescence (ASTM C 216 and ASTM C 902): Not Effloresced.

E. Abrasion Resistance (ASTM C 216 and ASTM C 902): 0.15.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Do not begin installation until substrates have been properly prepared. If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

3.2 PREPARATION

A. Clean surfaces thoroughly prior to installation. Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.

3.3 INSTALLATION, THIN BRICK

A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and approved submittals.

1. Lay masonry with full head and bed joints.

2. Lay all thin brick plumb and true to lines.

3. When adjustment is necessary to be made after mortar begins to harden, remove hardened mortar and replace with fresh mortar.

4. Lay masonry in bond pattern as indicated on drawings or general notes. Reference BIA Technical Note 30 for additional requirements.

5. Tool exposed joints when "thumb-print" hard.

6. Flush cut all joints not tooled.

7. When pointing, rake mortar joints to a depth of not less than 1/2 inch (12 mm). Fill solidly with pointing mortar. Tool joints.

8. Joint Profile: Tool mortar joints to a concave appearance.

9. Joint Profile: Tool mortar joints to a concave V-shaped appearance.

3.4 INSTALLATION, BRICK PAVERS

A. Install in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and approved submittals.

1. Use Bricklayer's Method with stiff plastic mortar for setting bed and joint filling.

2. Lay all brick plumb and true to lines.

3. Mortar that has reached initial set prior to placement of the pavers shall be removed and discarded.

4. Joints shall be tooled to the required profile when the mortar becomes thumbprint hard.

5. Pavement should be cured under plastic sheeting or other methods to maintain moisture for at least seven days or as weather conditions dictate.

6. Do not allow traffic until mortar has cured at least seven days or as weather conditions dictate.

3.5 CLEANING

A. Cleaning Handmade Brick:

1. Clean pre-selected sample wall area. Do not proceed with cleaning until approved by Architect .

2. Clean by bucket and brush method in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and as outlined in BIA Technical Notes 20.

3. Use cleaning compounds recommended by manufacturer based on type of brick selected.

4. Pressure washing or cleaning with a wire brush are not acceptable.

B. Cleaning Handmade Pavers:

1. Clean pre-selected sample paving. Do not proceed with cleaning until approved by Architect .

2. Clean by Bricklayer's Method in accordance with manufacturer's instructions and as outlined in BIA Technical Notes 20.

3. Use cleaning compounds recommended by manufacturer based on type of brick paver selected.

4. Pressure washing or cleaning with a wire brush are not acceptable.

5. Sealer coatings are not acceptable, and not required.

3.6 PROTECTION

A. Protect installed products until completion of project.

B. Touch-up, repair or replace damaged products before Substantial Completion.
