14 June 2016: [Talk] The Revival of Bicycle as a Green and Sustainable Means of Transport for Neighbourhood Travel
Dato’ Foong delivering his talk
In a bid to shed light on the myriad positive effects that bicycle has as a mode for short distance neighbourhood transportation, Centre for Extension Education (CEE) in collaboration with Centre for Sustainable Development and Corporate Social Responsibility in Business (CSDCSR), Green Campus Committee, along with Department of Student Affairs (DSA) joined hands in initiating an awareness on the green and sustainable means of transport in a talk at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) Sungai Long campus on 14 June 2016.
Jeffrey Phang delivering his opening remarks
Titled “The Revival of Bicycle as a Green and Sustainable Means of Transport for Neighbourhood Travel,” the speaker, Dato’ Ir Foong Choy Chye introduced the development of bicycle from 1817 to present. “From a two-wheeled, wooden vehicle that was straddled and propelled by walking swiftly, now there is a range of bicycles such as the BMX bike, mountain bike, electric bicycle and many more,” he shared.
Dato’ Foong also emphasised the energy consumption of various modes of transport and the pros and cons of using bicycles in today’s world. “Bicycles don’t burn fuel, hence there is minimal carbon footprint,” he said.
As he promoted the use of the electric bicycle, also known as power assisted bicycle, he also discussed the development and general specifications of the bicycles, as well as the legality and future trend of bicycle usage for the last kilometre journey. “With electric bicycle, there will be less effort to cycle to go further.”
Commending on the effort, Assistant Professor Jeffrey Phang Fatt Kong, Head of the Research Cluster for Sustainable Township, said, “I hope Sungai Long will become a model where other townships can follow suit,” during his welcome speech. He also highlighted the importance of cycling integration in urban mobility due to the impact of climate change and urbanisation. “Our city can collapse without sustainability,” he stressed.
