Vice President Johnson individually asked each of the members at other locations to verify that the meeting notice had been posted outside their location and to indicate whether there were members of the public present at any of the other locations. The members verified that the notice was posted and reported that no members of the public were present at any of the remote locations. There were members of the public present at the Sacramento location.
Call to Order
Vice President Johnson called the meeting to order at 10:08 a.m. She took roll to establish that a quorum was present for the teleconference meeting.
Salute to the Flag
Superintendent Jack O’Connell led the Board, staff and audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Announcements
Vice President Johnson explained that the Board would meet in Public Session for Item 1 and would then go into a Closed Session, during which the audience would not be present. After the Closed Session, the audience would be invited back into the meeting room for the report from the Closed Session.

No individuals addressed the Board. No action was taken on this item.
Vice President Johnson informed the audience that the Board would meet in Closed Session.
Closed Session
The State Board met in Closed Session from 10:12 to 11:20.
Public Session Reconvened
Vice President Johnson reconvened the Public Session at 11:20.
Closed Session Report
Ms. Steentofte reported that the Board met in Closed Session to discuss Chapman et al. v. the California Department of Education etal., AlamedaCounty Superior Court, Case No. 2002-049636 and gave direction to their attorney regarding the settlement proposal. They also received an update on Coachella Valley Unified School District et al. v the State of California etal. Case No. CPF-05-505334 and gave direction to their attorney regarding entering into a settlement discussion.
Announcement
Vice President Johnson reminded the Board members that they would receive a press release that afternoon on the STAR and the CAHSEE results and that the release would be embargoed until Monday August 15 at 11:00 a.m.
Adjournment
Vice President Johnson adjourned the meeting at 11:41
