Personal Mission Statement & Code of Conduct

You are your own corporation. You are building your personal brand. You therefore need to define who you are and what your value proposition is. A personal mission or purpose statement does this for you. Read the following two brief articles and craft your own personal mission statement:

Vozza, Stephanie, “Personal Mission Statements Of 5 Famous CEOs (And Why You Should Write One Too),” Fast Company, February 25, 2014, http://www.fastcompany.com/3026791/dialed/personal-mission-statements-of-5-famous-ceos-and-why-you-should-write-one-too

Cooper, Steve, “What’s Your Personal Mission Statement?” Forbes, May 7, 2013, http://www.forbes.com/sites/stevecooper/2013/05/17/whats-your-personal-mission-statement/

Please note that personal mission statements don’t have to be long to be thoughtful and to provide the guidance you need to direct your efforts, including the development of a personal “stop-doing” list.

Now, let’s take your personal mission statement one step further and strengthen it by crafting a personal code of conduct. A quick Google search will provide you with a variety of definitions for a code of conduct. I kind of like the following: A guide of principles designed to help professionals conduct business honestly and with integrity. Why do I like this particular definition? This definition reminds us that we are professionals with principles.

To help you develop your personal code of conduct, visit the Fair Labor Association’s website and read its code of workplace conduct. You’ll find the code by clicking “Our Work” and then “Labor Standards.” What aspects of the FLA’s code of conduct resonate with you?

Guidelines:

1.  Your personal mission statement and code of conduct should be fewer than 250 words in length. Provide a word count in the upper right hand corner of your write-up.

2.  Use the DOCS Grading Rubric to help you craft your personal mission statement and code of conduct.

3.  Be thoughtful and creative.

4.  Have fun and craft a mission statement and code of conduct worth following.
