CLEAN-UP PROCEDURES

FOR BODY FLUIDS POTENTIALLY INFECTED WITH

BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS

Body Fluids that are considered Potentially Infected with Blood borne Pathogens:

BloodSemenVaginal SecretionsSaliva in Dental Procedures

Any body fluid visibly contaminated with bloodAny unidentifiable body fluid

Regulated Waste: Contaminated items that could release blood or other potentially infectious material if compressed, i.e. items soaked or caked with blood must be disposed of in a red biohazard bag. This bag must be tied and stored in a red barrel awaiting removal.

Recycling must be called to properly dispose of all regulated waste: Mark Coltx7612.

Whenever there is an accidental spillage of body fluids potentially infected with blood borne pathogens, the area is to be ISOLATED and CLEANED as soon as possible.

Non-Porous Surfaces:

1)Put on gloves

2)Place paper towels on top of the spill to absorb all of the fluid

3)Pick up the towels which have absorbed the fluid and place in red biohazard bag

4)See the cleaning & disinfection instructions for: Spill Kit; Oxivir Wipes; or Bleach (Note: Bleach requires PPE, mixing and labeling)

5)Disposal: For spills involving fluids classified by OSHA as potentially infectious (including blood, semen, and vaginal secretions), use the red biohazard bag to dispose of paper-towels, towelettes, gloves and other contaminated trash.

6)Remove and dispose of gloves

7)Wash hands

LAUNDRY INSTRUCTIONS FOR CONTAMINATED CLOTHING

  1. Remove contaminated laundry. Use Universal Precautions (Gloves, hand washing)

Contaminated laundry is to be handled as little as possible. It must be bagged at location (i.e. bring bag to laundry, not laundry to bag.)

It must not be rinsed or sorted.

2. Contaminated clothing should be transported to the cottage washer in a plastic bag and washed immediately. It is not to be left, to be washed later, and it should not be sent home.

Employee’s clothing if contaminated should also be washed immediately. Always have a second set of clothing available.

Contaminated bed linens and towels that need to be washed in the central laundry are to be placed in a special water-soluble bag (one that is made to disintegrate in the washer) then sent to the central laundry.

If there is likelihood of soak-through because the contaminated laundry is also very wet (i.e. soaked with urine) place it in the water-soluble bag and then place the water-soluble bag into a leak proof container (a larger plastic bag) to be transported. Label outer bag.

Water-soluble bags are NOT to be used in the cottage washing machines.

If the laundry is SOAKED with BLOOD or any other potentially infectious material, place it in a red biohazard bag to be thrown away. Red biohazard bags filled with contaminated material are to be placed in a red barrel and Mark Colt from recycling is to be called to remove it.

  1. Washing Instructions:
  2. Wash clothes in washer with ½ cup of bleach per load
  3. Dry clothes in dryer
  4. After clothes are removed from washer, run the washer through another cycle, empty, with ½ cup of bleach.
